Running Back Is Now Longest NFL Drought For Notre Dame

  • With OLB Darius Fleming selected by San Francisco in the fifth round on Saturday afternoon, he became the first Irish linebacker since inside backer Courtney Watson (in 2004) to be picked in the NFL Draft — and the first on the outside since Rocky Boiman in 2002.

    That leaves running back as the position with the longest drought at Notre Dame. The last one chosen in the NFL Draft was Julius Jones in 2004.

    Cierre Wood or Theo Riddick — depending on whether he is considered a running back or slot receiver — could end that drought next year, if Wood opts to turn pro.

    It would be even better if Jonas Gray ends it today.

  • Todd McShay of Scouts Inc. had him as the 249th overall pick in the 7th round (Atlanta Falcons), so it is possible. At that point, though, I think it would be better for him to be a free agent so that he could look at the lay of the land and opt for where he believes he might have the best opportunity. Ryan Grant eventually found the right one in Green Bay.

  • Too bad Jonas had the injury. The way he was playing would have put him in 3rd or 4th round, maybe higher. He was playing

  • Have to imagine Cierre Wood will end that drought in about 363 days. I don't think he's a first rounder, but he's definitely good enough to go middle of the pack if he has another 1,000+ yard season this year.

    Slight correction but Ryan Grant signed as a free agent with the Giants first before they traded him to the Packers. I think the Giants got a 6th or 7th round pick for him. Worked out pretty well for the Packers.

  • look, i'm not always "mr. negative", but don't look for this scnerio to get any better while BK and the spread offense are here. true, parts of the college game, especially at some skill level positions, are changing the face of the offense in the nfl. but it will be a long while for the rb position to crack that. the nfl wants guys that can run primarily from a pro-set and big backs that can move the chains between tackles. that's hard to do from the two-point and teams that are pass happy at heart......

    This couldn't be more wrong.

    Jonas Gray would have most certainly been drafted this year if he didn't blow out his knee. Hell, Cierre Wood probably would have been drafted if he came out this year.

    Isaiah Pead, a RB Kelly recruited at Cinci, was just drafted in the second round this year playing the same offense. The offense is not "pass happy" and won't be going forward with the two TE base formation.
