SIAP: ND to B12? Agrees in principle as non-football member?

I think it is the only choice they had. The big east was great in basketball but now it is falling apart. They had to go to the next best conference and that is the big 12.

The best conference is the SEC, period. ND could get into that conference IF it really wanted to compete with the best.

  • Yes for football. But we aren't joining the big 12 for football. So besides football they aren't a strong conference.

I just think ND in basketball has established an identity and established itself in the Big East. i think it has helped in recruiting for Basketball and i dont think kids that fit in with our basketball program will be as interested in ND if we go to the Big 12. I think with the Big East changing i have said before it will really hurt the basketball program and really hurt what was a great basketball conference. Now before everyone loses their minds, lol, i totally understand football is the main concern at ND and it is my number one priority also. I was just expressing my thoughts on the basketball program mainly and the other sports. I could be wrong and hope i am,lol.

UConn and Syracuse are leaving. The Big East dominance in basketball is over.. I don't think playing against Kansas, Kansas St., and Texas is a slouche schedule anyways..

  • I would prefer the ACC still.. I know the Big XII is making moves to become the 4th super-conference, but with ND in the ACC, I think Florida St., VA Tech, and Miami stay put and they may be able to coax another power school into joining..

I respectively disagree. There is no way Oklahoma and Texas are left out of a super conference. The three mentioned ACC teams (which are certainly the top 3 football brands in the conference) do not carry as much weight nationally as UT and OU. I know there were rumors of OU and UT joining the PAC but I didn't make much of them and I think the Big 12 is currently more stable than the ACC

The way I see it, this is the first step in ND becoming a full-time member of the Big 12. The college football landscape is going to become a playoff without the +1. It's going to be the four conference champs battling it out and if you're not in one of them, tough. With the Big 12, we could keep our NBC deal much like Texas has their Longhorn network, and I'm sure we could work in some other small things to keep some type of relative independence as far as scheduling and such.

I highly doubt the conference champ model will have much traction and here's my reasoning:

    1) There are more than 4 conferences so every school in every other conference would have to join one of the four
    2) It wouldn't necessarily matchup the best 4 teams
    3) It de-values strength of schedule ultimately weakening CFB regular season (which is what it hangs its hat on)
    4) OOC matchups like Alabama/Michigan or USC/ND would virtually become irrelevant.

I'm curious to know what your thoughts are......

I know the Big East is imploding and thats what is leading to this. I guess i should have said i would prefer the ACC. Football drives the bus in college sports and i think thats what was the Big East's downfall. My number one priority is ND football but i am also a big ND basketball fan and a basketball fan in general and i hate to see what happened to the Big East from a basketball perspective.

16 teams, four conferences, 64 teams total. There is never going to be more teams than that in the championship conversation.

However, I do think you are right about SOS. It would be weakened unless you're factoring it in as tiebreakers, but ultimately it's importance factor would be minimal. I think OOC matchups are going to be predicated on how they factor SOS into it. Also, I would hope most of these schools have enough pride to keep OOC rivalries even if it isn't beneficial scheduling-wise to appease us annoy fans, supporters, and alumni.

+1 though sir. I'll have to think about it more.

The way it could work is if it were to be extended to an 8 team playoff with the four major conf. champs getting an automatic bid and a selection committee picking the other 4. That would allow for other conferences to enter the Boise States and allow ND to remain independent. But an 8 team playoff would make too much sense so it will never happen even though it would make absolutely everyone happy.
