Saturday's Funeral Service For Orlando Woolridge

  • The funeral service Saturday in Mansfield, La., for former Notre Dame basketball standout Orlando Woolridge included former 1977-81 classmates Tracy Jackson and Stan Wilcox as pallbearers as well as former Irish football player Vince Rachal. Also in attendance were former teammates John Paxson (1979-83) and Kevin Hawkins — the son of Tom Hawkins (1955-59) and a walk-on from 1977-81 — who made remarks during the ceremony) former Irish player and current Grambling head coach Joseph Price (1982-86) and Notre Dame senior associate athletics director John Heisler.

  • May Orlando Rest in Peace. He left this world way too early in life. He sure gave this old man some pleasureable moments watching him play for the Irish. God Bless you Orlando. You will always be a "Notre Dame Man"

  • He was my favorite ND player. Not the greatest, but my favorite. I can always remember him surveying the crowd during warm ups, laughing smiling and interacting with the fans. Once the game started he always delivered. Thanks for the memories and God Bless.

  • Simm,

According to Notre Dame associate AD John Heisler, Digger Phelps served as master of ceremonies Saturday night in Chicago for a dinner recognizing the golden jubilee of the ordination of Rev. John Smith, C.S.C., a former Irish basketball star who has long been involved with Maryville Academy, Standing Tall Charitable Foundation and Notre Dame Prep High School in Niles, Ill.
