  • No one wanted to hear it then, but there were some red flags when you commit to IU, then look around, then LSU, and at the last second opt for Notre Dame. Not sour grapes, just saying.

Very similar to what happened with Alex Anzalone this year — Ohio State, ND, and then at the last second Florida. It doesn't make someone a head case, but it does raise questions.

  • I remember reading when Kiel flipped to us last minute that the likelihood of transferring was high. Someone quoted some stats about recruits who repeatedly flip rarely stay at one college. I am no expert but it turned out true this time.

  • I honestly never thought he would play a down for the Irish, especially when we locked up Zaire. He is a talent, no doubt, and he needs a place to showcase it. Hope he does well. But I really like our stable of QBs heading into spring: EG, Rees, Hendrix and Zaire. There will be a lot of balls flying around in a few weeks.

Merlin, I can't believe I'm doing this but I totally agree, not so much on the head case part because I never met him, but c'mon kid, why in the world would you give up a top notch education with the ability to start in a few years for what could be shaping up as one of the top ND teams of all time, make history as a one or two year starter and then make millions in the pros....instead he will go to some smaller school, play 3 or so years against sub tier talent and maybe get drafted...all because you don't want to compete or wait 3 years to play? Just doesn't make sense to me, but good luck and like Merlin said don't let the door hit ya..hopefully nd uses that extra scholly on some stud dlineman for next year

  • First of all, I wish Gunner all the best. He was at LSU AND left - he's at ND AND he's leaving - and he hasn't played a single minute of a college gameday. I don't know what to call this(a few posters have) but I do know that the next stop is going to be VERY important that he set up shop and do the deal. A hs 5 star rating gets coaches/teams to look at you soooo maybe what ND saw as a scout QB(with all his attributes to see) wasn't all that impressive. Just a thought - still I wish him all the best. GO IRISH!

  • Personally, in the couple of interview sessions I had with him, Gunner came across as a very likable, well-grounded young man, and very easy and comfortable to chat with. But it's going to be hard to get past the reputation he has right now of going from school to school — although not nearly as bad as Chris Martin.

But here was the take from one of the top college football analysts, Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports, when asked about Gunner's future and where he might land:

"People will always be tempted by potential, and Kiel has prototype size, pretty good feet and solid arm strength. As I reported Thursday, I spoke to one coach at a big-time program who said Kiel's representative approached them about transferring, but they declined his interest. The feeling from that coach is that Kiel doesn't have the kind of grit or competitiveness they're looking for in a quarterback. However, that doesn't mean other schools won't be intrigued by his high school film and meet with him and then be convinced that he's worth a shot. Or that he can mature into being The Guy at their program under their guidance."

  • I think he should fire his parents......some very bad leadership and guidance here. The kid is so mixed up I feel bad for him. Like Lou said - he seems like a well grounded kid and by all accounts very likeable and talented - but man - this was a doozy of a blunder (or blunders that led to this).

I truly hope he can find his way.
