Shaking my head

  • I've been on this board through A LOT of losses. So therefore, it surprises me that I'm still awed by the tenor of this place after a loss. I'm not going to sit here and lecture people about the way they've responded to this. We're all paying members and huge fans and have the right to respond however we choose.

I just want to say this. It's clear this team hasn't arrived yet. It was clear after USF, it was clear after Michigan, it was clear after Pitt and it was made clear again last night. That doesn't mean it won't arrive. That doesn't mean Brian Kelly can't coach and Manti is overrated. It doesn't mean anybody is in over their head.

It means, in the second year of the Brian Kelly era, we're very inconsistent. Too inconsistent to be a good team and WAYYYY too inconsistent to be a championship team. But we've all seen flashes of greatness. I think we can all agree that the flashes we've seen are unlike anything we've seen from the program in a long time. Those flashes are keeping me fully aboard the BK bandwagon.

I'm as disappointed as anybody. But sometimes a loss is just a loss. The kids didn't play ball last night. Time to move on to Navy where, hopefully, the rebuilding can continue.

My luck with the Irish: 2-4, 3-time POTW

  • I agree we should not ever be suprised after the conditioning of the last several years and the steady drum beat of losses AT HOME....but we want to friggin believe so GD bad.

  • Very well said, NYDomer. It's incredibly frustrating to see the Irish lose in that fashion, and I think the fans feel the emotion and the frustration comes out on the board. But I don't think anyone would be so frustrated if they thought the Irish had no chance to win... As you said, we've seen the flashes of brilliance, and we know that when this team plays to its full potential, it can be amazing. So it's definitely frustrating, and perhaps even confusing, when inconsistency rears its ugly head again. In the end, it comes down to the fact that this is not yet a BCS caliber team. Everyone is trying to force it there, but it just isn't there yet. There are still too many holes in the depth chart, and there's not quite enough history of success in recent times to catapult it there. Let the culture change continue.

  • Good stuff, NYD. You don't lose games the way this team does, and think you've arrived. Doesn't matter how much talent is there. Not sure what it's going to take, but it whatever it is, it hasn't taken root yet.

    I may not be pretty, but I'm fast..... POTW 1/31/11 - 2/6/11

  • Kinsiah....great point on the culture change. I think we underestimate that some times. This is a process. Back to trying to be patient. Not fun.

  • We (and I include myself in that) always, always, always think we are ten times better than what are or ten times worse.

We are a team that keeps moving forward and then takes a few steps back. I believe we are getting there, it may take a bit longer than we'd like or need for mental health reasons.

  • Kelly isnt responsible for bone head turnovers. His team is still learning how to win and how not to lose

  • another thing we should consider is if kelly had followed holtz as coach we would be so much more patient with him now. its not bks fault that he has followed 3 bad coaches but we tend to blame him for it

Agreed. This is only mid-year two. If we are doing this in Year five that is a whole different issue. I have a hard time, but I must be more patient. At least I feel like he has ND moving in the proper direction. The recruiting, on paper, is looking great.

  • NYD - Well said!! I agree with you - yea it's hard to stomach but I do agree that the "flashes of greatness" have been there. ND needs to rebound with fervor and discipline aganist Navy - when Ara's teams lost the next game was, usually, a dominating performance by ND. That's what I'm hoping to see! GO IRISH!!

  • What bothers me is the fact that we should NOT HAVE LOST these games. Mistakes, bad coaching, and other things that should not have happened caused these loses. We are better that our record shows. When someone, either athletes or in live itself, does not live up to their capabilities, it upsets me. And this team is better than itsd playing right now.
