Sneak peak of 3 new products -- Help w/ feedback

  • 247Sports family,

We are a couple weeks away from introducing three new really cool products to the 247Sports Player Database.

http://247sports.com/Player/Lorenzo-Carter-22968 (you can see these products in the image below)

    #1. Ranking History
    #2. Crystal Ball (version 1 of 2)
    #3. Skills (version 1 of 2)

Here's a quick description of each:

#1. Ranking History: Shows the "ratings" and "rankings" history for each prospect ... shows both 247Sports and #247Composite .. graphical illustration comparing 247Sports with the industry.

#2. The Crystal Ball: Version 1.0 of the Crystal Ball allows any recruiting analyst in the 247Sports network (both National and team reporters) to predict where a prospect is going to commit and sign and records the prediction date. The product shows users the prediction from each analyst and also gives an overall prediction percentage for potential schools. ... Version 2.0 coming later this year will allow all 247Sports members to predict commitments and will earn reputation points, badges and free time for their predictions. ... Version 2.0 will also allow other recruiting analyst in the industry to make predictions and contribute to the analyst prediction.

#3. Skills: The 247Sports national team has assigned 5 different skills for each position. The Skills that each player is rated on are specific for his respective position. Admins have the ability to add more than 5 skills -- especially useful when rating athletes and jumbo athletes. ... Version 2.0 coming later this year will allow 247Sports national analyst to craft a written evaluation as part of this product.

Disclaimer ... when you view the images below, please note that the specs for the 3 new products are "very rough" right now. Most of the efforts with the product team is on functionality at this stage. They will begin cleaning up the look and feel and usability factors mid week, once the products are finalized.

So, here's were we need your help and feedback. We are at a point where we are developing many different products/modules for the Player Database. This is a great thing, but we need to adjust our layout and prioritization of each area of the Player page.

For example, as designers we need to place the features that are most used and most important near the top of the page and in areas that best satisfies our users. I would like to take some time to measure your feedback on which products you use most often.

Please rate each product on a scale of 1 to 5 for most important to you:

    1 -- Don't use
2 -- Marginal value, could live without it
3 -- Solid value, occasional use
4 -- Needed product, frequent user
5 -- Great Product, use all the time

-- Please rate each product below with a 1 thru 5:

    Featured: Articles/Updates from the Network
    Stats: (player stats)
    Bio:
Player Tweets: Tweets from the player's Twitter account

  • I won't comment on the entire list, but the two things that I think would really improve the service is the 'rating history' (this is close to a needed addition for me) and the 'crystal ball' as long as it doesn't get too bulky by including everyone with a pulse on the page.

The one thing on the list that scares me a little bit is the 'player tweet' function. I really feel that these kids shouldn't be encouraged to tweet knowing that it is going to go nationwide on this site.

  • All of the additions are good ones. I would say I would like the rankings history the most (a 4 in your scale), and the skills (again, a 4). The crystal ball I would give a 3 to, but the version 2 allowing anyone to predict (and we see it) would clutter it too much, unless you somehow separate the experts from the rest (aka tabs on the top).

Other than that I use the position rankings, timeline, and recruit interests the most (giving a 5).

  • I really like the crystal ball product.

  • I like all the features you have there. The crystal ball thing is cool, and you guys should keep track of who ends up being the most precise. A fun game between analysts.
All of it seems a little overwhelming at first, but I can get use to it.

One thing of note: Need a better explanation of Top247 composite. Would like to see more obvious breakdown of where other services have the player ranked.

I also would appreciate a better explanation for the composite rankings. It's mind boggling they way it's set up now.

  • One thing I really like that TOS does is provide a "pro comparison" to the prospect.

For example, they compared Nkemdiche to Demarcus Ware. Problem is they only do it for a handful of prospects

We are logging the data and we plan to circle back and add points based on accuracy and predicting early in the cycle. This product will also have another life when users start participating. I don't know if we will be able to get to that this year. In a year, the Crystal ball could evolve into a great predictor of commitments and an excellent interactive product. This version is only a fraction of what it could be once we get our hands around it.

After we get these next 3 products released, the rest of the year is pretty much devoted to building great message boards.

I appreciate that suggestion. To be honest, I never really thought about adding it to our offer because I thought it was so inaccurate and not really representative -- and I mean that has no shot at all to Rivals.

One version we mocked is to let the site publishers do a their team comparison. For example, have Jason Sapp log an Notre Dame Comparison for Jaylon Smith and the Alabama publishers do the same. That may actually provide more interest.

I appreciate the comment and we will add that to the list to review.
