Spring Synopsis: Purdue

The Boilermakers return 19 starters next year from its first winning season in five years. Optimism is high in West Lafayette following an injury-free spring session.

    Dan Murphy

  • This is the best Purdue team since the hey-day of the Tiller era. Still, we should never lose to them at home.

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

  • Simm,

I agree that Purdue might have a little more bite this year ... but never is a strong word. Former AD Dick Rosenthal said the two words he avoids at all costs are "never" and "always." Purdue is one of those long-standing series where you can often expect the unexpected.

There have been too many "should never lose" games I've seen at Notre Dame Stadium in recent years to take anything for granted. (See earlier story today about this on home page.)

    Lou Somogyi

  • "They also catch a break against Notre Dame out of conference play since the Irish will be battling jet lag for much of the week leading into their game after returning from Dublin."

This game in Ireland is idiotic.

Pretty cool if you ask me... Other than ND & Navy who else is playing a game in another country?

  • The key point of this analysis is that this team is weak up the middle. I hope BK realizes that with a mobile QB, 3 maybe 4 solid RBs, and a big quick Oline we should be able run the ball until their safeties are practically forced to play up in the box. Not possible with Rees because he is not a threat to fake a handoff and scamper down the sideline.

  • "since the Irish will be battling jet lag for much of the week leading into their game after returning from Dublin." That's a stretch. I flew to England on my honeymoon when I was 30 and the jet lag lasted 36 hours. These guys are 19. They'll be over it quickly.

  • purdue is going to be a game where we should win aslong as we dont turn the ball over got to protect the ball last year the talent level on the depth chart showed purdue cant hang with Notre Dames talent i look at this one to be a solid win

Are you an elite level athlete who performs in front of millions of people every Saturday about to embark on the toughest schedule ND has faced the last 25 years under an embattled coach trying to bring the Program back to prominence in the eyes of fans who will vilify you for every misstep? If you are, then your experience with Atlantic travel is relevant.

Being born and raised in Dublin (with a daughter also born there having graduated from ND) I would suggest this trip will be an amazing and well deserved trip for these fine young men. They have the focus to enjoy a trip of a life time and will still be able to be ready for Purdue. I think its a great idea. BTW if anyone cares I played rugby dozens of times in Lansdowne Road, our national stadium, which was recently revived as the new and amazing Aviva Stadium.

    Go Irish and Irish!

I'm also an Irish Citizen and my family is from Kells.

Visit Dublin in the off-season. This is about winning.

  • Bought my first Irish Setter in Kells! We will beat Purdue, they will come back inspired.

A little over the top. No, I'm not an athlete....just a weekend warrior. Stop and think about what you wrote and you'll see (maybe) that it's counter-intuitive. It's perfectly reasonable to expect younger, more fit people to recover more quickly from jet lag.

As someone who is a multi-million miler on United there is a lot of crap spoken about jet lag. I agree it has some effect but I also agree with Shelby that young men will hardly notice. The problem with jet lag is the attitude of "when I get there it will be really such and such a time in my body and I will be EXHAUSTED!" Get over it, it is actually the time it really is where you are adjust and move on.

Now if they were flying back on Friday and playing Saturday, it would be an issue. But coming back Sunday and 5 days until Purdue...really?

These guys have work-out AND practice routines which are going to be thrown away. Routines are CRITICAL especially at the beginning of the season. Then, they are starting classes. You miss some sleep, big deal, drink a few coffees and power through the next day or two. These guys are elite athletes at an age where sleep is critical. At the end of the season, OK, at the beginning of the season with Purdue, MSU and Michigan back to back to back without a bye is ridiculous.

Ok! Guess you're the expert on world class athletes and world travel.

BTW When I played in Aviva (Lansdowne Road) it was in front of 40,000 spectators and I am a million miler...just saying I might have SOME idea as to what I am talking about. BTW rugby is that football game played without pads and a helmet. Just sayin!

I don't need to be an expert to recognize a boondoggle when I see one. I don't need to be an expert to recognize a schedule designed for success and a schedule doomed to failure.

  • This thread took a strange turn.

    Wes Morgan

  • Athletes will handle 'jet lag' as long as they are immediately prepared for the next game when they land at O'Hare and bus on to Notre Dame. Flying back to Indiana is no big deal and after a quality victory over Navy they will be 'flying high' as they get ready for Purdue. Game number two, at home, will be a signature win. Make no mistake - this year's team will take no opponent lightly - and the Boilermakers will be in for a tough game and feel the terror of the Irish.

Could you envision a let down? Not possible.

LOL, agreed. Went from a Purdue synopsis all the way to someone declaring repeatedly they are a "multi-million miler on United" and further they are apparently a good at rugby. Strange indeed.
