Most of us on this board have been fans of Notre Dame football for a long time. A lot of us remember the 1988 National Championship and the disappointment of the 1993 season Boston College dibacle. Even more of us understand how abysmal the last nearly 20 years have been in regards to those seasons, and the seasons before.
There have been seasons, like 2002, 2005 and 2006, where it appeared that ND finally found their coach and were on their way back. Then the bottom falls out, and we are back to the reality that ND is still searching.
When BK came in, the whole atmosphere around the football team changed along with some significant advancements in training and nutrution. I think that there have been real upgrades to the athleticism of the players on this team, and the physical fitness levels across the board. But, up until last season, we still lost games to teams that shouldn't even be on the same field with us, talent wise. We underachieved for BK's first two seasons, which is (sadly) typical of Notre Dame football since '93.
Then last year comes around, and everything just seemed to fall into place. The offense was amnenic at times, but the defense was the best in the country. For as much as it appeared that last year was another aborition 2002 et al, you can point to be the building blocks put in place for the first two years that have built a winning team.
Then, Keil decides to transfer, and yesterday happens, and I find myself all of a sudden falling back into the mindset that Notre Dame will just never get over that hump. For as little production as we lost in the transfers, my mind initially went back to that dark place.
I need 2013 to be a validation year for ND. Yesterday just made me realize that I am still not fully on board with Notre Dame being back into the upper echelon of college football programs. There is still a part of me that is worried that last year was an aborition vs. the culmination of all the hard work that the players and coaches have put in. I am not saying that I need ND to go undefeated again, but I need to see forward progress again (mostly offense and special teams).
My question is where to do you stand... Do you need 2013 to be a validation year? Are you good with just saying that we played for the NC last year, we are back (barring a 2007 type of year)?
