I agree. I can't believe the hype with South Florida. I have been telling my friends if the IRISH don't win by 20 I will be disappointed. I don't think South Florida scores more than 10. Our defense is going to be better than last year and deeper. The more I type the more upset I get about the thought of South Florida keeping it close. I know it's been a tough time cheering for ND for many years, but c'mon writers, you need to recognize that the IRISH are for real and give us a little respect. If they refuse, then the IRISH will earn it with win after win. They will have no choice but to eat crow. It's the year of THE FIGHTING IRISH and if you are not on board then ............................ I'll leave it at that.
Will we beat USF ... yes! But please we do not need any statement game. Save that for UM.
Here is my reasoning.
ND has to win not only on the field but in the press.
The press has only two bylines for ND ...1. Return to Glory 2. A Fraud.
If ND make a statement against USF ... the press will have a field day - especially ESPN ... hyping the UM game. It will put undue emotional pressure on the team to win big. Our team does not need that pressure this early in the season. And there will be no way that ND can "just" beat UM and come out ahead in the press.
IMO ... we have got to think like champions. "I want to kill USF" mentality is counterproductive.
Its like we as fans are too hungry. We don't believe in the team enough ... so we want to see the team reach its potential early in the year regardless of later consequences. We have nothing to prove against USF except a workman like win.
Take a deep breath and take the long view ... let the team slowly build a fire this year. Let it all come together in October ... and let's steamroll through Stanford .. and on to a BCS bowl ... perhaps yes, even the title game.
BUT to get the title game this year ... we not only have to win the games - we have to win the press. If the press jumps on "Return to Glory" theme early ... then ND's small flaws this year will get picked apart and we will have less media power for the votes at the end of the year - and its those votes which will put us in the BCS place we want.
Tomorrow is just a battle, not the war.
