Sun rises in east, dog bites man, OSU commits violations

  • Well, that didn't take long. For those not following the story, OSU just reported 46 secondary NCAA violations, including a few by the new football coaching staff. For those keeping score at home, that means Urban Meyer currently has more NCAA violations than wins at Ohio State (a streak I'd love to see continue). While these violations do indeed appear minor (Mike Vrabel using smokeless tobacco on the sideline, Meyer wishing luck to a recruit during a non-contact period), I think one can be forgiven for thinking that where there is smoke, there may well be fire. Given the track record of Urban "Anything Goes" Meyer and The Ohio State Reprobates, does anyone believe more substantial violations aren't being committed, or aren't on the horizon?

  • Simply, yes. These are self-reported, in attempt to look like they cleaned up the program. More to come.

  • Almost every school in the country does this. They are not serious and Ohio State reported 46 violations throughout all its sports, not just football. What's more interesting is why Myer was at the game to wish the recruit luck if he knew he was not supposed to have contact. This is the tip of the iceberg and violations at OSU will be in full swing by September. Other football violations include making a video for a recruit and a current player paid out of pocket for a cab ride while with a recruit he was hosting.

  • The violations themselves weren't that bad or big a deal, but when you are already on probation and reporting FORTY SIX more secondary violations that's unacceptable and a problem. Particularly when the AD and new head coach are doing them.

It also tweaks me a little to see Spence and Elliot involved since ND was in the mix. Spence cited a family atmosphere and staff interest as a reason for picking O$U. Who is to say part of that interest isn't that Meyer wished him luck in the playoffs while Kelly didn't because Kelly followed the letter of the law. That's where the line between secondary violations and no violations blurs.

Okay, so Urban is at the grocery store and bumps into the third cousin twice removed of the brother in laws aunt of a recruit, They then tweet that Meyer said excuse me, That would be considered a violation according to the NCAA, A coach got in trouble for chewing tobacco on the sideline, and that's a violation? Give me a break. The NCAA is out of control with these rules. We probably had to report violations ourselves. Don't be so quick to judge. Nobody can be perfect according to the rules set by the NCAA.
