Sunday Conversation With Kelly

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly puts Boston College week to bed and turns his focus to the season finale at Stanford.

  • Hendrix was ready against Maryland, vs Navy, yeah right. committed to Rees is an understatement. Wonder how Crist would have performed if Kelly had stayed "committed" to him. Hendrix can run the ball and can definitely go vertical. I get disgusted watching Rees dink and dunk when we have some great receivers, a
good offensive line, and some fine running backs. Good defenses "KNOW" Rees is not going to run the ball, so they don't have to worry about him. Can you imagine what our offense could have done this year with a QB who could run or go vertical?

  • I am confused here...we could end up with one QB(rees) next year in a worst case..I agree where is Hendrix?..Does he have an injury? if the fragile can't run Rees goes down what happens?..I am talking next year on this...this seems a mess..Is Gohlson going to running back?..need the experts at B&G to explain all this to us..or is the gambler Kelly betting all on Keil?

"Strap on" is "No parts" spelled backwards...coincidence--- I think not!

  • Jonas Gray has so much to be proud of. What he accomplished this year was phenomenal and I pray that the extent of his injury will not prevent him being given a shot at the next level. That being said, I cannot help but wonder what the offense would have looked like had Dayne Crist been given a second chance by Kelly. Clearly there is a double standard. Not only was he not given a chance but any level headed kid such as Crist could not have excelled with a coach who screamed and yelled at him so much that his face looked like TCU's school colors. Tommy's errors are far more numerous and problematic for this offense than anything Dayne could have done in one half of football. If BC defensive people had held on to any of the passes Tommy threw to them, I mean forced into the receivers, BC would have covered the spread that the pundits had ND favored by. Were it not for great catches by Eiifert and Toma, I am not sure there would have been many completions beyond the line of scrimmage. Stanford will not be so generous. They have seen the blueprint on how to slow Floyd and will not have to defend against the different running styles of Jonas and Cierre. My prayer for next weekend is that our defense can continue to keep us in the game and that Luck will go color blind and throw the ball to our defensive backs. If not, it will be a long day for the Irish players and fans as we watch Tommy continue to run a spread offense in spite of the fact the young man is not athletic enough to throw the ball on the move if his life depended on it. Jonas and Dayne you have made us proud for numerous reasons this season and during your careers at ND.

well put' i think we will hand luck the heisman because we continue to play zone defense and luck will pick us apart

  • First interview Kelly has given that makes me disappointed. What is the reason for being less than honest about Hendrix?

Kelly " I think it’s been [being up a lot] or in tight ball games that has prevented maybe him (Hendrix) getting on the field. "

So a tight game or being up a lot, prevents him from entering, what's left?

C'mon coach you are better than that.

  • It was a hard game, and it shouldn't have been. It almost looked like BC had our playbook. We beat a 3-7 team by two points. They had two TDs and we had one - thank God for Rufer.

Had we played Hendrix, in the Navy, Maryland and Air Force (played more in the Airforce Game), we might have been able to move him into the mix and confuse BC's defense. I mean come on, they never even "defended" against the possibility that Tommy might run the ball. What if Tommy get's hurt - that lack of experience, for Hendrix or even Golson, will come back and "bite us in the Ass". Doesn't make sense to me

  • i really thought after the Air Force game we would see Hendrix more on the field. I think he could have had success on saturday against BC by running the ball against their defense of dropping all those guys back into coverage. Very perplexing indeed.

  • We can't possibly know why Hendrix has not been used more.

Personally, I think Kelly wants Rees to have as much game time "practice" as he can. My sense is that the bet Kelly is making is that a more finely tuned Rees, warts and all, is better in most situations than a more talented Hendrix given his inexperience.

But this applies only to now. Next year is a whole new ball game. But, right now, you have to see it as Kelly thinking Rees gives ND the best chance to go 10-3. Again, I will give him the benefit of the doubt on this, given he is on the sideline during practices and games, while I am just typing on a keyboard in cyberspace.

  • It is simply beyond belief that Hendrix has disappeared after showing what he could do. When talking about Hendrix Kelly doesn't sound like he knows what he's talking about. That's truly sad.

  • I agree that Andrew Hendrix needs to play against Stanford . With the loss of Jonas gray he can help our offense in case stanford drops eight into pass coverage like Boston college did. I sure hope that Theo riddick is healthy and can help out as a running back and maybe run some plays from the lepracat formation.
