BORGHI,
Let's break this down. For 2012 you have, so far:
* 4 5th-year seniors: Cave, Goodman, Lewis-Moore and Slaughter.
* 15 seniors
* 20 juniors
* 25 sophomores (including recent transfer Amir Carlisle)
* 17 committed freshmen so far, including the 3 early enrollees.
That gives you 81 of a possible 85. This is why it's important to not give scholarships out just for the sake of giving them out. There can be a numbers crunch.
So, let's say ND gives out three more in the current freshman class for an even 20. That puts it at 84 (maybe the 85th can be given to a senior walk-on).
Next year you will graduate the four fifth-year seniors, still have that 85th scholarship potentially available, plus seven other seniors who are out of eligibility: Jordan Cowart, Tyler Eifert, Zeke Motta, Theo Riddick, Manti Te'o, Robby Toma and Ben Turk. So now you're up to 12.
There are eight players eligible for a fifth year in 2013: Carlo Calabrese, Dan Fox, Jake Golic, Zack Martin, Tyler Stockton, Nick Tausch, Chris Watt and Cierre Wood. I'm not expecting Golic or Stockton to return. Now you're up to 14.
Potentially, Martin, Watt and Wood all could go pro. That could be 15 to 17.
One or two transfers are an inevitable part of a college football. That could take you to 16 to 18.
That is the trade-off when you have a class like the one in 2011 where you now have 25 people. Some other class after it will have a much lower number (unless there are more transfers).
A lot will happen between now and next February. See how it plays out.
