    Here’s a review of the freshman seasons of the 21 previous early enrollees at Notre Dame since 2006.

  • Thanks Lou! I was trying to remember when the first year was that we started allowing early enrollies.

  • Lou ..on another subject...looking at B&G page 23 which shows the elig. years left....it looks like in 2013..including Goodman.. we will only have 9 scholarships available if all others stay..instead of this years chaos..we may be filled up by september..have we ever just let guys go?..Weis supposedly let 10 guys go at Kansas..

  • BORGHI,

    Let's break this down. For 2012 you have, so far:

    * 4 5th-year seniors: Cave, Goodman, Lewis-Moore and Slaughter.

    * 15 seniors

    * 20 juniors

    * 25 sophomores (including recent transfer Amir Carlisle)

    * 17 committed freshmen so far, including the 3 early enrollees.

    That gives you 81 of a possible 85. This is why it's important to not give scholarships out just for the sake of giving them out. There can be a numbers crunch.

    So, let's say ND gives out three more in the current freshman class for an even 20. That puts it at 84 (maybe the 85th can be given to a senior walk-on).

    Next year you will graduate the four fifth-year seniors, still have that 85th scholarship potentially available, plus seven other seniors who are out of eligibility: Jordan Cowart, Tyler Eifert, Zeke Motta, Theo Riddick, Manti Te'o, Robby Toma and Ben Turk. So now you're up to 12.

    There are eight players eligible for a fifth year in 2013: Carlo Calabrese, Dan Fox, Jake Golic, Zack Martin, Tyler Stockton, Nick Tausch, Chris Watt and Cierre Wood. I'm not expecting Golic or Stockton to return. Now you're up to 14.

    Potentially, Martin, Watt and Wood all could go pro. That could be 15 to 17.

    One or two transfers are an inevitable part of a college football. That could take you to 16 to 18.

    That is the trade-off when you have a class like the one in 2011 where you now have 25 people. Some other class after it will have a much lower number (unless there are more transfers).

    A lot will happen between now and next February. See how it plays out.

    Good stuff! The only way you can continue to sign 25-30 players a year is by playing in the SEC. I think BAMA has signed something like 109 players the last four years.

    He'll get a chance... what he does with it is up to him. I would hope that he is absolutely part of the open competition for the starting QB job... I have never cared about he redshirting of players. If he is #1 or #2 at the end of spring/fall, let him play and learn the old fashioned way.

  • Thanks Lou..
    My thinking was:
    Cowart is not on B&G list.+1 for 10
    Eifert stayed..not realistic.+1 for 11
    Taush stays..no kicker repacement so far.+1 for 12
    Martin,Wood, Watt return due to only two OL in current class.+3 for 15
    Full 21.+1 for 16

    Did not make a guess on transfers but without naming names..I see three others not getting fifth year so at max of 16-19

    Lou, you include Carlisle in this list. How about Prestwood and Badger?

    Thanks,

  • Lou, throw in Lo Woods pick six to stat reel. That was pretty exciting.

  • dave83nd,

    Badger and Prestwood are both included.

    leftcoastndfan,

    Lo Wood's interception came this season as a sophomore against Maryland, not during his freshman season after his early enrollment.
