The Tausch-Brindza Battle

  • Brian Kelly indicated that senior Nick Tausch, who drilled a 50-yard field goal Saturday that sailed way past the goal posts is the top field goal, edging out sophomore Kyle Brindza.

On kickoffs, it's a 2-for-1 deal in which game situations, return men, etc. will dictate who will be in. With the kickoffs now coming from the 35 instead of the 30, and touchbacks now coming out to the 25 instead of the 20, Brindza will be the man on kickoffs if the percentages say it's better to have the ball at the 25 if a top return man is back there, and maybe he can get it deeper. In other situations, Brindza can specialize in the hang time kickoff that can be fielded maybe at the 5, giving plenty of time to the coverage unit to possibly make the tackle inside the 20.

Look for a feature on Tausch later this week.

  • Brindza can always punt. God knows that Turk was below-average at best last year. If Tausch wins the kicker job going into game one I think that's something that could be explored.

  • NDGuyinFL,

Turk was well below-average in the first half of last season, but in the second half he found a much better rhythm and performed well.

Brindza absolutely was not ready to punt last year. The coaches were looking for an alternative during that first half, but Turk always came out as the better punter. That's not to say that down the road Brindza won't improve. He definitely will need to be prepared for the role in 2013 because Turk will be out of eligibility at the end of this season.

  • The PK position is the one I am not worried about having a drop off in production, despite the transition. Tausch is proven.

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

Does it concern you at all that he only seemed to be effective while doing his rugby punts though Lou?

Turk ended up with a fairly good average by the end of the season and averaged over 43 yards per punt in the last 5-6 games iirc.
