The Tide defense

There is the gold standard of defenses. Compare what you saw last night to what we have watched all year. That's right...... there is no comparison. That should be the level of play that the Irish strive for .
Holding LSU to under 100 yards of total offense is astounding.

George,
Never could I have envisioned a defense in today's college football world finishing No. 1 in all four major defensive categories — run defense, pass efficiency defense, total defense and scoring defense.
Just about every rules change since 1978 in football has been designed to help the offense score more points, so to even think about a 1966-like ND defense that allowed 24 points all year is insane, yet this Alabama defense, while playing in the top conference in the country, allowed 8.1 points per game. In 12 of the 13 games, no one scored more than 14 points. It truly is mind boggling to achieve that in today's football.

I agree George. We are improving on defense but we are no where near what we saw last night. We need to keep working hard and keep recruiting hard.

Unbelievable how good that defense was....depressing that ND doesn't have a defensive player that would come close to playing on Alabama....not even Teo.

Can't disagree. But I would submit to you that is not possible to have a defense like that with players capable of meeting the academic requirements at ND, 97% of which graduate. Defenses like Alabama's are only possible at academic schools with football programs that graduate less than 50% of their "student-athletes."
Nick Saban is a great coach--but even he could not construct that type of defense here at ND, IMHO. There is a reason that he was only a "pretty decent" coach at Michigan State, a "great" coach at LSU, a "below average" coach with the Dolphins, and a "great" coach at Alabama.

LSU has no offense. It is not hard preparing for an offense that is led by Jordan Jefferson, which is garbage.

You mention great Coach at LSU and Alabama. Think about this. Like you said about graduate percent. Coaching in the SEC is easy because of all the players you get to choose from.

Frito is correct... I have said it for years.. ND has chosen its path...and until Alumni stop contributing big dollars because of FB program we are who we are...
Think about our D and tell me... would Fox or Calabrese or our corners even dress for either one of those team... we only have two players maybe 3 that would play on those D from our D...
SEC schools are minor leagues of CFB and until ND folks and I mean all of us get off the student athlete and our kids are better BS... we will always be who we are...

They had enough offense to be ranked #1 going in. Alabama did the same thing to 12 other teams as well.

To get the answer to this question as to why Notre Dame can't compete with the likes of Alabama go to Youtube.com and type in Courtney Upshaw postgame interview. The kid can't even speak in complete sentences "hol dat ting folk" i'm guessing he got a new coloring book for Christmas thus the excitement.
