The argument for Gunner next year

  • Yes Irish fans its never to late to think about next year. Heck we are excited when we get a commit in 2014.

    Anyway to the title at hand.
    Gunner will start next year due to Golson and his lack of mental understanding. He is a good QB with an above average arm and good mobility but he is not NC stock of QB. He needs to add (any trainer will tell you this) 20 lbs. Going though one season is one thing but all these hits on a small frame will add up. IE Vick. Golson also shows a lack of understanding the postion. He can not make the read and GK is from Kelly's offense.
    GK can take the hits of a season.

    And just to reinforce.
    After this season.. Realistically.
    We have 5 QBs

    Gunner
    Malik
    Rees
    Hendrix
    Golson

    I know we like to think all if those guys are starts but not everyone can wear the burden of the Irish Starting QB. So figure Malik takes a redshirt and Poor Hendrix chills and gets his Med Degree. It's going to be Golson being the backup with Gunner being the starter and Rees being on staff within 3 years.
    Golson is good but GK ceiling is much higher and can be a solid pocket passer for the spread. While it may seem like Kelly is grooming Golson. It's still his job to coach the players he has and do the best with what he's got. Just because he is coaching EG does not mean he is grooming him, just coaching.
    I'm on team gunner if not next year then the next with 3 years of eligibility on the clock.

  • Keep convincing yourself on that. Gunner will have to show far more than what I saw on his high school films and you really want to break in another quarterback next year?

  • What makes you come to the conclusion that Kiel is that much better than Golson? The Blue-Gold game?

  • Why go through the learning pains of starting another RS FR again next year? Makes very little sense. By next year Golson will have already started a whole season and doing a good job for RS FR QB. What makes you think that Gunner has a good mental understanding of the QB position? Plus Golson has more than an above average arm.

    All I can say is wow! Actually I'll say a little more.
    EG has done an incredible job for a rs frosh. He's only started 8 games and played roughly 8 games and is definitely improving. I just don't know how you can say "Golson shows lack of understanding the game" or "He can not make the read" or "lack of mental understanding" or "not NC stock of QB". That last one really gets me. How would you know that he will not be "NC stock of QB"? All indications are that EG like many of the other players is and will continue to develop. I respect your right to say what you feel but I just completely disagree with your conclusions.

    Can someone come up with a comparison of True freshman and RS freshman stats for their first 8 games? You can include Johnny Football and the guy from Oregon too. Include mediocre to highly touted QB's for the last 10 or 15 years and compare their stats to EG's. By no means EG's stats incredible but I think he is doing good for this point in his career and most importantly is showing improvement.

  • Stop this nonsense. Golson is a first-year starter and hasn't lost a game yet.

    Brady Quinn's first year: 157/332 47.3% 1831yds 9td 15int 93.5 rating
    Everett Golson so far: 131/226 58.0% 1572yds 13td (5 rush) 4int 124.5 rating

    Absolutely no reason to discuss replacing Golson at this point.
