Title hopes shrinking already

  • Notre Dame opened spring practice with pretty good odds to win a national title in Vegas given that they haven't been to the dance in two decades of even sniffed it in five or six years. Those dropped this week at the end of the spring season.

Vegas pegged the Irish with 22-1 odds for a national title in March. They are now 25-1, according to Bovado.com.

ESPN's Travis Haney, in his review of how the odds for many schools changed during spring, said it wasn't really clear why Notre Dame dropped, although they probably got a little closer to actual expectations.

It's simple. Vegas was not getting a lot of action on the Irish. Odds are initially made public, not necessarily on who Vegas thinks will win, but on the perceived action on that particular team. Vegas is in the business of predicting where the money will go, not trying to predict which team will actually win.
