UPDATED: Rees' charges reduced to four misdemeanors

  • Police officers observe several people fleeing over a fence. It's dark outside, and your only seeing people from behind as they are jumping a fence. Do you really think the police were able to identify Tommy. "Hey guys, drop your donuts, that's Tommy Reese, get um!" Let's not stray away from who is to blame here, Tommy is! Just like his irresponsible throws into coverage, he made a poor decision, fueled by alcohol. Definetly not the actions of a responsible, mature adult, and definetly not someone who should be the starting qb at THE NOTRE DAME!

Just added this to the body of the actual story, but in case any one misses it:

According to the prosecutor's report a cab driver pulled into the middle of Notre Dame Ave. to slow Rees when he was he was running from the cops. The cab allowed the officer to catch up with Rees, who then kneed the officer in the "lower abdomen."

At that point the cab driver grabbed Rees and held him until the officer was able to recover and wrestle Rees to the ground.

So this will go down as the first official tackle of the 2012 season for the "cab driver" or will it count as an assisted tackle while we have to give him a .5 and the cop a .5? Can someone send that cab driver a "shake down the thunder" shirt or what. LOL!!!!

  • I am very disappointed in Carlo if what he really did make those comments. He is a fellow Jersey boy and I always felt he was posterboy for the RKG that ND recruits. 3 star out of high school with a 5 star heart and work ethic. I really think he owes the ND nation an apology and I hope Kelly sets him straight. What on earth would possess him to say that? Does he think this is a Godfather movie?

  • Tommy Rees is one very, very lucky man, on many counts. The most important one:
Where I live, when an officer says stop and you don't, there is a good chance you get stopped by a bullet. Second in importance, if the officer was - power driven - "I'm the law", Tommy could have been roughed up beyond recognition.

Not long ago, up the road from us, a biker was stopped by an officer who said; "License and registration". The biker reached into the sachel on his hog for the docs; "Bang!!" Killed instantly.

Forget football! Hopefully this will be a great teaching and learning moment for Tommy and the rest of the squad and the ND Communty.

Last year on our annual summer return from ND, we got lost around the Dome in Atlanta ~ 9:00 pm. I pulled up to an officer for directions. My younger son instantly learned a very valuable lesson. As the window went down on the passenger side, the officer moved his right hand to his gun. It was like they were connected; the window and the officers right hand. He kept that position through out.

One of the Top Ten Rules in Situation Awareness is - Do not, Do Not get in The Man's Face.

Hopefully Tommy will be as lucky as he was last night with the administration and allowed to continue at ND.

    Good luck TR.

Amidst the host of jokes on this board today someone brings out the severity of what could have happened upon Tommy getting physical with the officer. An absolute crossing of the line of those who protect us. Great post. Just as Floyd was also lucky, maybe Tommy's last chapter can have a good ending. Unfortunately the current chapter has a lot yet to be written. I wish him luck, and as this astute post pointed out, he has already received some.

  • Apparently a freshman in my hall when I was a senior there was the kid in the vigilante cab's backseat. Hilarious.

  • I'm not shocked he got caught from behind.

  • I would like to see Rees given a shot to do the right thing, a TON of community service, and finish his education.

I just don't want him to even be in the discussion of starting QB. If the picks weren't bad enough, this is the icing on the cake of bad decisions.

  • Maybe if Rees gets a chance to play again He can use the knee to the stomach to fight off oncoming defensive ends!

Like another analyst said "If he would have just stayed put and got at worst a minor consumption ticket" there would hardly be any talk about this incident today.

Yep. I have found where alcohol is concerned, most compound one bad decision by making another one on top of it, and another, and so on.

My Dad always told me nothing good ever happens after midnight, or when you go drinkin'...I found out the hard way he was right (again).

  • I am the only person who hopes this ends "teacher's pet" career at ND. He should never touch the field again. Bad this happened, but let us never hear from him again.

  • Boy, Tommy sure showed that cop. He hit the cop in the knee with his groin.

  • If these charges are not dropped, and if Rees is convicted of them, I would bet that Rees will never play another down for the Irish. Resisting arrest, disobeying a police officer's orders to stop, and assaulting an officer when finally apprehended is not the kind of thing Notre Dame will brook, especially from a football player. At most universities, football players have near immunity to things like this. At Notre Dame, they're treated very harshly.
