  • I said this last fall and I will reiterate again, Notre Dame is not a BCS team with Tommy Rees as the starting quarterback. They say time heals all wounds and in this case memories, but I do not have a selective memory. We saw what we saw. Time does not change the lack of foot quickness, arm strength, physical strength and turnover (decision making) propensity.

I'm a die hard ND fan but I will not allow myself to buy into blind faith. We have three alternatives that appear to have a far greater upside. I expected two of them to get more playing time last year so we didn't face the current dilemma. To this day I don't understand why Kelly didn't use last year as an opportunity to give Golson or Hendrix more playing time. The results we were getting in both our record and performance at the QB position provided ample opportunity to send in the back ups. Why he never did this escapes me.

September is around the corner. I don't want to hear it anymore. We know what Rees brings. Show me something I can believe in. Deliver something that sparks this team and makes them more than one dimensional. Something that gives opposing defenses something to prepare for and worry about. Show me something we can do exceptionally well!

I will listen to opinions but obviously my mind is made up.

  • I agree , Rees is not the one . They will lose either Hendrix or Golson . I also don't believe Lynch is gona stay , he knows he can play anyplace he goes . I hope I am wrong about Lynch but I know I am right about Reese .

  • This is actually a very popular opinion. One I shared, not so long ago. However, as I stated in a thread earlier, broaching the very same topic, I am starting to accept the possibility that TR might be our starter in Dublin.

The problem is, someone else has to beat Rees for the job, which is seeming to be a pretty tall task. BK cannot simply hand the keys over to another guy because he has more potential. I am certain BK, the rest of the staff, and the players all know way more about the current status of the QB battle than any of us. They will know if someone is given the job, unearned. Nothing could destroy a team faster. So, if TR starts against Navy, it's not the fault of BK or Rees.

I know your mind is made up, as mine was a couple weeks ago; so, I will not try and convince you otherwise, nor do I want to. However, for your sake, you should probably at least start preparing for the reality that TR could be our starter in week 1.

  • TSull:

I am prepared for that reality and I'm also prepared to be pissed off. You can also take away a team's hope before the kickoff with status quo.

    Carrer Statistics:

    369 completions
    575 attempts
    32 TD passes
    22 Interceptions
    17 sacks

    43 rushing attempts
    -58 yards rushing

The passing stats might get you 9-3 with a great defense. The rushing stats will destroy your hope and chance for success, particularly in close games.

I always viewed him as a person that was recruited to be a backup. In my opinion, TR is the best damn back up in the country. That's not a bad thing.

  • This opinion is so unpopular that there are only 3-4 threads per week over the past 8 months on this topic.

    jpv121

  • I don't necessarily disagree with you. I think there is a case to be made for TR, but I'm not going to make it. You have to believe in what you're selling, and in this case I'm not sure I do. Plus, as you said, your mind is made up.

I agree that if the team doesn't want Tommy, then that would destroy morale, as well. It works both ways. However, I highly doubt these guys have an agenda. I'm sure they want the best guy to play. If it's at least close, I think a coach has some margin for selecting someone else; however, the onus is on the other guys to at least make it close.

  • I like Tommy, but i don't think this offense can nearly reach its potential as a "spread" offense with him as QB. If he ends up winning the job then we can't be saying we are running a true spread offense with all its options. If Kelly wants to run his spread he needs a QB who can perform all the options, etc.

  • It's obvious that Rees is not a championship QB.

I'm fairly certain nobody has a handle on the qb situation better than Coach Kelly and his staff.

If they (the coaching staff) were to announce Tommy Rees as the starter, you believe they are deaf, dumb, and blind or do you think they are starting the QB that gives them the best chance to win?

At the end of the day if nobody can supplant Rees as the starter, it definitely isn't Rees' fault.

I for one think it will come down Hendrix or Golson

  • I'm getting to the point where I'm not sure why this is even being discussed. If Hendrix, Golson or Kiel shows the staff they are ready to start ahead of Rees, they will. Last year, everyone clamored for Hendrix because he showed a spark against Air Force. Well, look at the numbers that Rees put up against Air Force. When Hendrix was put in against legitimate defenses, he showed he wasn't ready. I don't care how multi-dimensional the other quarterbacks appear to be, they need to be ready to run an offense at a collegiate level, and none of them have proved they can do that, and until the coaches believe they are at least close to ready based on what they see in practice, they are not going to just roll the dice because those of us in the cheap seats are anxious for an alternative. That isn't how it works on the sidelines.

I will paraphrase a thread I started after the FSU Bowl fiasco: I am a big supporter of Brian Kelly. I was very excited when he came aboard and still believe very strongly that he knows what he is doing. But if Tommy Rees is our starter again next year, I will no longer hold Brian Kelly in high regard as he will have proved to me that he is not the coach I currently perceive him to be. If he starts Rees, in my humble opinion, he is coaching scared and limiting his own success, and that is not the coach I am looking for at Notre Dame. It will be at that point that I begin mentally looking for the next hopeful coaching candidate because the writing will be most assuredly be on the wall.

All that being said, I desperately hope that BK and his staff will understand that it is better to prepare a kid who can take us to a winning level than to keep winning 7-8 games in an effort to save your job.

We are on the same page. I agree, it's better to shoot for more than settle for a known quantity of 7 or 8 wins. This is Notre Dame. Start acting like it!

Jimbo, I know you know your 'stuff', but I do disagree on Tommy being a finished product. This has been mentioned before but he is still younger than Jimmy Clausen was when he started his first game for ND. A QB's arm can in fact get stronger as he gets older and his body can handle more strength training. He can in fact make better decisions because he has seen many things before. He can be overall physicaly stronger. Footspeed improvement? not so much.
Regardless, what I saw last Spring, I would have ranked the QBs, based on physical-football ability: Golson, Hendrix, Rees, and Crist. I thought Golson needed about 3 starts to become a great college QB and I still feel that way. I would think, especialy with what I anticipate being a very good Defense, that our opening schedule would be 'new QB' friendly, and even if he flops, Tommy could still come in in relief. I cannot conceive of another season where Tommy takes 99% of the snaps.

Sorry to single you out, because there are many who share this same opinion, but I just don't understand this logic.

Unless you think BK has some sort of evil agenda, why would he not play the QB that gives him the best chance to win? I'll bet he wants to win as badly (probably even more so) as we all do.

I don't mean to come down hard, as I have a hard time envisioning TR as "the guy", as well. However, willing to at least admit that I have only a miniscule fraction of the knowledge as this staff. More importantly, we only have very limited exposure to the other competitors. You're making an assumption that we have someone capable of beating out Rees. One would think so, but we honestly cannot say.

To speak in such absolutes is a bit silly if you ask me. And to completely change your stance on BK's ability to coach, based on TR winning the QB competition (and let's be honest he'll have won, if he's named starter) is fickle at best. I'm glad Swarbrick doesn't consult with these "expert" boards (or any others) when making decisions.

  • purely one dimensional QBs aren't going to win us an NC so unless Tommy has gotten more mobile and athletic in the offseason then we're toast against the good teams and will go 9-3. With a QB that is somewhat threat to run we have enough talent to get to an NC. i like Golson.

  • Since when is Tommy Rees one-dimensional? In my book he doesn't really do anything good. He's not a good passer, not a good runner, not a good "point guard" as others have mentioned past QB's who have won titles.

Every snap that Tommy takes in Spring and Fall camps is a snap wasted. I will lose all faith in BK if Rees starts in Dublin. And I will certainly fear that ND will have wasted another 5 years with the wrong guy.
