I've been following these rankings closely and for the second time in a row every player ranked in 247 that is committed to ND has dropped once again.

  • espnu 150 is coming out tommorow and I think that they are the most accurate. They seem to have more resources to cover recruiting than any other outlet. The staff here though is much better in reporting news and being accurate in that. As far as ranking i always look to the 150 as a guide over others.

Poor Steve Elmer might not even get to play a game before he gets dropped from the top 247.

  • I just can't quite figure out how there can be so many ranking updates and changes when there hasn't been a real down of football played by these kids since November.

Eesh. I wouldn't agree there especially with how any guy that plays in their under armor game gets a 30 spot boost.

I'm just glad Neal wasn't committed to ND before the game.

  • Dang, 247sports has got some love for Dorian Johnson...#11 overall now from obscurity a few weeks ago!

Definitely sad that ship sailed on us...

    NDIrish1616

  • I still believe Jaylon Smith has to be our #1 target. James Onwualu will be in that top 247 by Febuary guarensheeed!

  • As dansch20, the ESPN top 150 came out. Among the 10 Irish verbals, two made it: OT Colin McGovern (91st) and OT Hunter Biven (95th).

  • It's weird to me how low Jaylon Smith is rated according to some of the other services. Espn has him 46th! Based on the rave reviews he's gotten at camps, it seems to me like he should be higher. This is a 6'3" 215lb. linebacker that is shutting down 170lb. WRs in the 7 on 7 events. Come on! This guy is a top ten talent.

THe Steve Elmer ranking is a freaking joke, Jason. You know it and I know it! No sugar coating it. We already know how well you guys support one another but it's ok to disagree with rankings. In all honesty what rankings to you disagree with the most? This can be underrated or overrated

  • What I dont understand is how Corey Robinson is a 85 overall but he does not have a national ranking at his position. Yet there are guys rated 83 or 81 and they are ranked like 76th nationally.

Steve Elmer's definitely a curious situation...started at #13 overall or something (#1 in the state of Michigan ahead of Shane Morris) and outside the top-100 now. Since he hasn't played a down since the early rankings, I wonder if this is one of the big players they'll keep an eye on for when he finally starts attending some of these camps. If he plays well then there's absolutely no reason he shouldn't be catapulted back to where he began!

  • His dad(not sure if he posts here anymore) had some interesting comments about his rating on the 4HL. Here was his post and sorry Mr. Elmer if you are still posting here:

We are glad some of the other guys that are still looking for offers are getting their time up near the top.
Steve was/is the top guy on the board for many of the best programs in America, he got an early invite to the Army Bowl and got invited to the Rivals 100 five star challenge so we are pretty confident with where he sits. Once he got his ND offer we could care less about someone else's subjective numbers.
This will all play out realistically sooner or later when they work out side by side or play common opponents.

  • Yes, Elmer's dad still posts here on Rockne's Roundtable. He gave a great breakdown following the last rankings when his son was moved outside of the Top 100.

And I fully expect Elmer Jr. to move back up the list following additional events and his senior season. He's working very hard and receiving additional coaching to fine-tune his technique.

Yep, that is what I was referencing. He's a great resource to the board

  • we cant keep up with the rankings....just dont have the time with all the extracurriuclars steve has and also his brother and sister are equally involved in as many or more endeavors.
if steve would not have known right away that he loved ND and waited till now to commit and had his 40ish offers he could probably coast along near the top of the list (just a guess). However this is not the case. The rankings are an animal that needs to be fed by interest, media, offers, performances, frenzy, popularity and to a certain extent skills and talent.
Rest assured Steve is the still one of the fastest, agile, flexible and intelligent big men in the country - HS or otherwise. He continues to get reps before school with a very good agility footwork coach, jumps alot of rope, he still lifts hard - squats over 600 and deadlifts over 700, can run a sub 5 sec 40 at 317 pounds, throws the disc and shot put, and also works with the great one - Lomas Brown once a week - so he is doing his share of football training and preparation to join the ND squad as prepared as possible - however we have not been able to feed the rankings machine (and frankly dont really care too much either).
Steve had a minor hammie injurie that took about 6 weeks to get PT on etc that we didnt want recurring so we handled it with kid gloves - took some time away "from the circuit" so to speak. He missed the recent event in Detroit so we could go on spring break one last time as a family, he will miss the rivals 100 five star challenge to be on a mission trip with his brother and my wife with thier youth group from church and then to report directly to the ND camp to spend time with his new brothers in south bend, which he thought was more important than an all expense paid trip by the good folks at rivals - especially since we had been planning the mission trip for over a year and the ND trip for quite some time. We are too busy not to have a plan and sometimes it is very difficult to vary from it - due to so many variables. The rivals 100 five star invite just came a week or two ago and it is too late to change all the other plans and people that would be affected.
Looks like we wont feed the machine until June 3rd at a Nike event in Illinois - until then I tell Steven - he is like a leper!
If rankings are your gig - it might be a while for steve

  • Well that was eloquently put.
You must be a very proud father Mr. Elmer. Thanks for the update.

  • Sounds like Mr Elmer is handling things perfectly. Priorities are in order. Family vacations are precious as kids get older. The only reason I wish he was going to Rivals would be to help with recruiting, but the mission is defintely a reason to miss. Plenty of football in the future.
