Walk-ons in Bengal Bouts

  • Two Notre Dame football walk-on player will box in the quarterfinal round of the annual campus tournament, Bengal Bouts, tonight. Freshman Eamon McOsker and junior Tyler Plantz will both be fighting at 185 pounds. Last year, senior walk-on Chris Salvi won the campus title in the 188-pound division.

  • Notre Dame just announced the Bengal Bouts finals (March 1) will be streamed live on ESPN3.

  • In days of yore and up to up to about the late 1980s, this used to be considered the best off-season conditioning program for the football players.

The most epic battle ever was the 1976 superheavyweight bout between Ross Browner (future Lombardi, Outland and Maxwell winner) and Ken MacAfee (future Walter Camp winner and No. 3 finisher in Heisman). Word had it that afterward that Coach Devine prohibited such matches between his football players.

Imagine last March putting Manti Te'o and Tyler Eifert in the ring and letting them whale away at each other. I don't know if that would have been endorsed by the coaching staff.

I'd rather our players beat the crap out of Bama instead of each other.

  • Lou, when did the Football players stop participating in the Bengal bouts?

    mskorup

  • Browner won by decision.

By the 1990s, I don't recall many, if any, football players partaking in Bengal Bouts. Maybe backup lineman Greg Stec in the mid-1990s.

I knew that. If you would have remained mum, I would have also. Love them both.

  • Both McOsker and Plantz won last night. The referee stopped Plantz's fight in the first round and McOsker won by split decision. They could potentially face each other in the finals if both with their next match.

  • teo4Heisman,

I wanted to link a video of one of Quinn's messages on YouTube, but it's actually more sad than bizarre.

Quinn was actually in the heavyweight finals 3 years in a row, according to an NDNation poster with the handle "Olson."

In 1986 (freshman year) he beat defending champ and fullback Pernell Taylor for the title, but then Taylor won the 1987 rematch. In 1988, a backup DL Steve Roddy defeated Quinn for the title. I wasn't at the bout, but was told by someone there that Roddy threw a wicked haymaker that connected and left Quinn out cold.

  • Former Notre Dame basketball player Mike Broghammer is also still alive in the heavyweight division. He won his first match last night by unanimous decision.

I don't know if Dan Quinn's ever lost a fight.

It amazes me that he last that long at ND.

  • So if the current team all entered the boxing tournament, who would be most likely to end as champion? My money would be on Troy Niklas, his reach would make it tough for anybody to get near him.

Good pick -- I could see Jarrett Grace holding his own.

  • Good choice with Niklas. The idea of receiving a punch from Stephon Tuitt wouldn't be pleasant either. Might be noted that freshman long-snapper Scott Daly owns a black belt in Taekwondoe, and freshman safety John Turner won an AAU national title in taekwondoe in junior high.
