Watkins ready for ND visit

One week before he visits Notre Dame, four-star defensive tackle Carlos Watkins discusses what he wants to see from the Irish.

  • I'm glad to see that he's visiting ND next week! Is he a pure nose guard prospect at 270? I think he could reach 300 easily and be a huge run stopper in the rotation with Nix! Nose Guard is a big priority in this class.

Definitely could play nose guard, but could also be a SDE.

I agree that NG should be a huge priority. Besides Nix we don't have a true NG. I may be wrong, but many felt that NG wasn't a need position this class. This kid has impressive measuresble's and lots of tackles for loss and sacks, so he is a disruptor. Pretty impressive to secure a visit this soon after only offering him 2 weeks ago.

  • Be careful how you wish upon a star (s). There are very few five stars and although the rankings are valid, remember these recruits have yet to play their senior year in high school.

And keep in mind not all five stars qualify for the excellence of a Notre Dame education.

Our coaches know how the recruits fit our program and have done a pretty good job so far, so trust them over the rating services.

  • NT is a huge priority for us us this year because we passed on them last year. In order, my wish list is:
    1. Shittu
    2. Watkins
    3. Schutt
    4. Day

I would love to land any 2 of these guys, along with a DE to fill out our DL haul for this cycle. I think we will land some studs to go along with the best DL class in the nation last year! Hopefully the staff can impress Watkins to put us in a good position to land him.

  • With his height, weight, and speed (even if that 40 time is close to accurate), he seems like an ideal 3-4 end that could drop down to cover a guard in an even front ala the Army game. However, that is concerning given the size of DE recruiting class we just brought in and his stated desire for early playing time.

Having said all that, I agree that nose is a position that should be addressed as you would expect an incoming nose to take a couple of years to groom, the importance of that position to a successful 3-4, and the risk of injury.

Either way, sounds like a very interesting prospect. If the coaches want him, that's good enough for me.

Absolutely star69, Goldman is a beast! However, I just don't see any legit interest of Eddie in the Irish (This is one of the few situations in life that I would LOVE to be wrong!)

  • I believe Goldman unveiled a top 15 (or so) the other day and we weren't even in it. I think Watkins is as good as any other inside DL prospect we've offered, so I'd love to have him.

  • I don't think nose guard is as much of a need as some people think. Seems the coaches are going after DE and OLB with a little more sense of urgency. I think they like their depth at NG and may not wind up taking one this class.
