I can't see Tommy getting any less than basketball player, McAlarney, did for pot. This would mean a semester suspended from school. Looking at his chances against his competition after they have played a season, he would realize that he would have no future playing at ND and would probably transfer. There is a lot of supposition here, but that is the way that I see it playing out.
This sounds about right. Hope the kid gets counseling, this kind of behavior is akin to someone wanting to throw it all away because the pressure and criticism is too great.
Good point, Monte Cristo. When we watch these players, we don't know what they are really like. In Tommy's case, he could be a good kid who snapped for some reason, or he might have an impassive face and body language and be a jerk. As you said, I hope that he gets some counseling and learns from this mistake.
I think he will get 2-4 games but wouldn't be surprised with any decision seeing the history of punishment has been inconsistent.

McAlarney was a different situation, legaly. He had an illegal substance and he was driving a car. He was expelled from school (later re-applied) and his penalty was meted out by the school, not his coach. Rees' biggest problem is his tussle with the cop. The courts have first dibs and then the university, which has guidelines in its handbook (which helped Floyd but probably hurts Rees). It is hard to see Rees being an active member of the team on opening day. If he dodges a legal bullet, then the school decides what appropiate. If he manages to stay enrolled in the fall, then it would fall to Kelly to develop a series of goals, as he did for Floyd. The calendar is not as friendly for Tommy.
