Charlie is one of us he is a graduate of Notre Dame. I for one am rooting for him and wish him well. Sometimes things just dont work out. I can guarantee he did not want to fail. Also the man has been a part of multiple Super Bowl championships. Things just fizzled here.

I'm with you Merlin. Very curious to see if Dayne will excel in the system in which he was originally recruited to play. I think the transition to the skill-set required by Kelly's system was a rough one for him, so it will be interesting to see if he'll end up proving his 5-star ranking after all. I'm not entirely sure Weis has the ability to succeed longterm if he continues the patterns he set up at Notre Dame.
On a related note: I'm also somewhat curious, skeptical, insert word of your choice here about his bringing in other ND players and former coaches... Now I know this won't be a popular opinion among those who blame Kelly for everything bad that happens in the world, but I almost feel like Weis's continued interaction with a lot of these ND guys after his departure meant he had a stronghold on more than just the university/program payroll these past couple years. From a student standpoint, nothing wrong with staying in touch with someone who was your mentor, but you've got to wonder the impact that contact may have had on the other guys who were really trying to go all in with the new coaching staff and plan. Now that Weis has his own program to play with again, and his recruits are continuing to transition out of ND through graduation/transfer, one hopes that whatever negative impact remained will go with them.

this is why fans of other universities make fun of nd fans. everyone else is at fault
except the person in charge. do you know why dane crist when to kansas? not because
charlie weis has some magical powers, it's because he fits better into that offense. and
what coaches from brian kelly's staff left to go to kansas? if my count is correct it is zero.
i think charlie was just a tad bit busy the last couple of years coaching to have his
interaction with "nd guys" mean very much.

Newman, never once did I say that Brian Kelly wasn't at fault for things that happened this season. I'm an eternal optimist when it comes to whomever is the current Notre Dame coach, as I was with Weis until the end of his regime, because I want everyone in that role, and by definition Notre Dame, to succeed. That doesn't mean I am ignorant to mistakes made by previous or current coaches. At no point did I say "everyone else is at fault except the person at charge." There was no reason for you to bring this to the level of personal insult and condescension, as you clearly have no indication of who I am as an ND fan.
Besides, this thread isn't about what's wrong with Brian Kelly (there are plenty of those.) In my post, I was simply addressing the specific topic that was raised here, which is Charlie Weis and his new team that happens to have a number of former ND guys involved in some way. (Also, please note that I made no mention of any current coaches leaving ND for Kansas. I'm well aware that Kelly's staff left for schools other than Kansas.) It has been well-documented that Weis continued contact with "his guys" through this season, no matter how busy he was elsewhere.
It is reasonable to consider that there is some impact on those players, and therefore, the team chemistry as it evolves from one regime to the next. As another poster astutely pointed out, Kelly has made no effort to disguise his opinions of how things were done here before, so there is surely some difficulty in being a young man on a team in the midst of a transition from one staff to another, especially when there is clearly negativity involved.
Personally, I hope Dayne has a good year. And I hope Charlie Weis learned enough from his experiences at Notre Dame that he'll be able to find success as a head coach somewhere else.

Well said, Kinsiah. When there is coaching transition, the impact of the prior coach always lingers into the new regime. It is literally impossible for that not to happen. Some of that impact can be mitigated if a coach makes a clean break from the school and his ex-players. Apart from that, I wish nothing but success for Dayne Crist at Kansas, and beyond, as he appears to represent that frequently used phrase: a real Notre Dame man.
