Seriously, I am not a huge Tommy Rees fan, and I know he cannot run the full breadth of the Brian Kelly offense, but what does the dude need to do to get some respect?
What he is is a gamer who can run a solid enough offense to keep us in games with the great defense we have. For all the mistakes Tommy made two years ago, to then being benched for a rookie, to then being called upon when Golson didn't have it in high pressure situations, to then going back to sitting on the bench.
Tommy Rees should have earned a ton of respect for a rational fanbase... and if he is needed, he will answer the bell to the best of his ability. Give the man the credit he is due!!

I'm going to take a contrary view - not sure that recruiting Elite 11 QBs and then red-shirting them; hoping that in their third year on campus they may be able to play is the best answer. We have seen elite teams throw freshman right into the mix with great results - Oregon, Stanford, etc. (Not to mention the Heisman trophy winner, who was on the scout team year 1).
Hendrix is not a D1 starting QB; and Rees is a great back-up (period). Would love to see them put Zaire in the mix. His goal should be to get to #3 QB this year - unseating Hendrix. Then be pushing Golson the year after.

Jim, those examples you gave were all redshirt Freshmen. I think it's always possible that you get a precociously talented Freshman who can make that step into the college game (Matt Barkley comes to mind), but it's relatively rare. Because there's so much to absorb, and the speed of the game is so much faster, coaches prefer to let young QB's marinate on the sidelines or practice squad for a year. However, injuries or Zaire's raw talent may dictate otherwise.

Agree, those players (and programs for that matter, with tons of talent and run-based systems around them) are the exception to the rule.
There aren't a lot of programs where the offense won't suffer if the starter goes down - the question is how well their depth will allow them to recover. Having a backup that has big game experience and knows the offense inside and out is a luxury few other teams have. Absolutely there is a drop-off, but I think when everyone thinks about Tommy Rees they're looking back at his games from his sophomore season. Obviously he has some physical limitations, but why assume he hasn't improved in that time?

Ham - how much is it an exception if a number of top programs in a given year have outstanding red-shirt QBs? All I am suggesting is we seem to think there is a prototypical "slow route" to starting at QB for an elite program - there are plenty of exceptions to that. Even if the guys I mention are red shirts - they are starting and doing well in first college action.

One follow up comment : I just felt Kiel was the real deal. No proof, though. Time will tell.
As far as Tommy goes, he has done a great job under difficult circumstances at ND and I respect him for his efforts under these circumstances. I think that he is smart and could lead the team next year so that we did not have a newbe at QB, however, with teams having a week to prepare for him rather than coming in as a relief ND would often struggle.
I can't help thinking that the love shown for Tommy on some posts above would be quite the opposite if Golson was hurt and Tommy was really our starter for much of next season. Then, we would be reading how Tommy can't throw deep, run, or extend plays.
