What We Learned: ND Still The 1!

The 22-13 victory at USC punched Notre Dame’s ticket to its national title showdown Jan. 7 against either Alabama or Georgia.

  • Lou,many times last season I posted on this site how I thought that the Irish were not mentally tough enough to be consistent winners I compared them to the women"s and men's basketball teams. What a difference one year can make. This team is mentally tough as was shown in particular against Stanford,Pitt, and USC.Finally it must be stated that Theo Riddick is the man he was an absolute beast last night.

  • I underestimated Riddick, as I'm sure most people here did. I can't begin to tell you how impressed I am with him. Not the fastest, strongest or most elusive, but he became a force with determination I HAVEN'T SEEN FROM A RUNNING BACK at N.D. in a long time. He willed himself into a great back and an NFL draft choice. Congratulations to a team that refused to lose.

  • Lou,

Well said: other ND teams may be more talented but none "will leave
a more indelible mark in the Notre Dame football pantheon than this one."

No Notre Dame alum, administrator, professor, student, player, coach, former player or coach, fan, subway alum or sports commentator of this generation will ever forget that in 2012, ND made history worthy or every comparison to the yeoman days of Rockne, Leahy, Parseghian and Holtz.

  • Not sure about that Scottfan..Riddick is as elusive and slippery as they come...defnitely not the fastest or strongest, but man that guy can break tackles and continue driving his legs

Agreed, Theo is probably the quickest guy on the team. He can stop on a dime and guys rarely get a clean shot on him...he is an NFL running back

Well stated - this team IS unique and what it has accomplished is, well words can't describe it, beyond what any of us have ever experienced watching ND football. The repeated goal line stands against Stanford, Oklahoma and, especially, SC will live in the annals of ND football lore forever! Yes BK, Coach Diaco AND the rest of this coaching staff deserve ALL the accolades that come their way. Consider playing 2 qbs coaching both up in attitude and skills just isn't another day on the job but speaks volumes of BK and this staff. After the game EG stated they(the team) weren't done yet - that tells us that this team WILL be ready for that fateful game - the BCS NC game! But regardless of that games outcome THIS season is ONE FOR THE AGES!! GO IRISH!!

  • From irish13:

"that fateful game" - agreed, we are destined to win the Nationial Championship!

  • Lou; I agree with you on the Heisman if Manti doesn't win it, they should just call it the offensive player of the year award. If it is going to be called the best college player award, Manti should win it hands down. How many LBs' could defend Marqis Lee, lead as many goal line stands. This young man inspired a so so football team like a QB. Manti willed this team early to win and be their best, and brought a fanbase with them. He is the only candidate that is a captain on an undefeated team. Manti is truly the best overall college player in the nation. If the voters have any respect for the award ,Manti will win it.
