What We Learned: UM 35, ND 31

Here are a few items to take from Notre Dame’s 35-31 defeat in front of an NCAA regular-season record 114,804 fans in Michigan Stadium.

  • How many times did you have to stop to throw up while you were writing that, Lou?

It's disturbing. I can't imagine what it would feel like to be a Michigan fan right now. Knowing that you should be dead-to-rights, but somehow every heave managed to score points. A fumble on the goal line picked up and taken in for a TD.

Even our 2006 comeback against MSU doesn't compare to this. I still can't believe it happened.

  • did kelly offer an explanation as to how a receiver went unguarded on the 64 yard pass? i just don't see how it can happen given the situation. and does ND not have a dime package? seems like it was a situation where you could rush 3 with two backers and 6 dbs.

  • Lou, our short yardage formation is a joke. Until we stop putting the QB under center in a bunch formation any defense we play will know we are running a dive play.

Look for many jump ball passes from Cousins to Cunningham next Saturday.

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

Bingo. Why in God's name did we not at least try ONE pass out of there on 3rd and short? You know, maybe not let them know that it was 100% a running play...?

  • What did we learn? We learned that this team has no killer instinct. That and we should never ever run the Tommy Rees roll out pass or the 3rd and 1 run up the middle ever again.

  • I learned ND does less with more than any team, in any sport.
I also learned I new to re-evaluate my ND addiction. This can't be a healthy thing for me.
I also just learned that Gray is the one that lost Gallon on the wheel route, he followed the wrong guy.
I need to learn why #23 Lo Wood hasn't seen the field much. Might be a question to ask somebody.

    JoePH

  • I will tell you what i learnerd,WE have no clue how to win! none. Also, Michigan owns us lately, owns us. This was one of the all time worst losses i can remember, and ive been watching since about 1973 when i was 7. Awful!

    First time POTW for 4/18/2011-4/24/2011.

    edd1066

  • I knew it had to be Gray since it was on his side of the field and he was the CB...not sure what the right thing to do ...sit him out for the rest of the year?..I agree we actually lost this game because we can't gain two yards when it is needed...we start the back too far in the backfield and run up the middle every time...plus put everyone in tight so the other team just loads up...insanity is doing the same thing over and over..why not try a sweep? pass?..Woods seems to be faster than last year ..he is not a pound it up the middle guy on short yardage...my question is : if we can see all this watching the game ..what are the coaches in the box seeing and relating back down? ..a good question to ask Kelly...I never thought they would be a top/top team this year ..but this is making me think to not watch anymore games..after 40+years of missing very few on TV and attending some..

    BORGHI

  • Well... on third and short, everyone of those plays WERE THE SAME PLAY! UM figured it out early we keplt bringing TE into motion and he lead into hole... they just started blitzing everybody and we ran out of men... Second I really have no idea who is coaching Gray... seriously... the man is lost out there... Thirdly, I said early on to a friend this team is still very immature and does not know how to kill their opponent down when they got um on the run... But I will say we hit harder, play the run a bit better... our secondary is slow at safety and one corner... And four turnovers lets teams as crapy as UM stay n games... this team has the ability at some level to reel off 5/6 in a row... if they could cut down to 1 TO a day

Same story, different season and coach. As long as Denard Robinson is at Michigan, ND won't beat them.

I'm taking my little girl to the park next week during the game. Just can't do it anymore.

same old same old at ND. Oh well it will give us something else to do this year instead of watching these dreadful performances.

  • Jiggi said it all! They same quote has been runnning through my head since the USF game.

    Different year, same Irish!

Stupid could be defined as doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result! Well, I now consider myself to be stupid! For some reason, I continue to develop these high expectations with my beloved ND when ND football is still ND football!

It doesn't matter who the coach is, it doesn't matter how great the recruits are or how great the facilities are or how high tech the weight room is or how up to date the nutrition program is... WE R "STILL" ND!

It appears that ND has been so broken for so long that all the kings men just won't be able to put her back together again!

I take solice in knowing that we are the best 0-2 team in the country! I will also take solice in knowing that we will be the best 0-3 team next week and possibly the best 0-4 team the week after.

We get rid of Weis and pull in one if the hottest college football coaches in the country. We tackle better, protect better, run better, etc.; yet we are 0-2??? WTH! Guess it just wasn't meant to be!

  • I'm sick right now, I can't take it anymore, wait all winter, all spring, all summer for the season and a BCS season is shot down in the 1st two weeks, what makes it so frustrating is that Notre Dame should be 2-0 and bangin on a top ten ranking right now.THIS SUCKS WITH ALL CAPITALS!!!!One year just one year I want to get out of September with a BCS bowl bid still alive and what happened to Diacco's shut down defense.absolut ly pathetic!!!!

    Greg Zeppieri

  • Its tough. What I'm more interested in is how ND responds. There is a lot of football left, and they can be a very good football team. Even though Michigan won, their terrible Defense will be there fallout. ND has to worry about ND; forget these games. In my opinion the better Team lost last night period. I still BELIEVE we can win out, however if we continue to commit turnovers it will be a long year.Go Irish. #Goldandbluethroughandthrough

  • I agree with most of what you say Lou. The killer instinct has been evident the past two years. The outcome the past two weeks should have determined by half time, with ND looking to go 3-0 this week. Notre Dame is losing due to mental mistakes and fundamental errors. As you mentioned they are doing some things right. MF, CW, KB and at times TR are playing good football. I think the offense will struggle at times until the quarterbacking situation matures. The secondary is a problem right now, maybe correctable through coaching, but ultimatlely probably through recruiting. The punting game like you say is a liability. Hard to believe those plays are being made by players on scholarship.

  • Have spent many years watching ND. We've had years with no talent, years with poor coaching or no player development. The list goes on and on. we have no excuses this year. This is definately a mental problem with the players. They ALWAYS shoot themselves in the foot when they take the lead. Its like they cant believe they are in the lead and choke instead of putting the game away. Happens everytime. I definately do not blame kelly for this. its obvious he is just as frustrated and cant figure these guys out. My biggest fear are the recruits we are trying to get this year. why would they want to come now?

    bill2018

  • I feared in a post last week that this ND team is snake-bitten. Looks like I may have been right.

Boy, do we know now how to lose, how to gift wrap close victories for the opposition. This week we couldn't defend against a school yard offense, where the QB either comes right at you in an obvious run, or he heaves it up for grabs.

23 seconds left and a UM receiver goes completely uncovered in the downfield flat. All the science and jargon of modern defensive football erased in a matter of moments.

It looked like a pickup team of good athletes playing ND last night, whereas we were clueless on our own short yardage runnning plays with the game on the line.

My take: the coaching staff, despite its virtues, is not in control of this team and has failed to discipline it.

Besides the poor formations and calls on short yardage, Kelly still pulls boners in the red zone. Running when he should pass and vice versa. it's almost as though his system -- his offensive philosophy -- gets the better of him.

To apparently lose at the end, to then apparently win and, then, to finally lose is the unkindest cut of all. When is this team going to learn how to attend to business for 60 minutes and nail down a win on a drive by drive basis? They simply do not cash in on their opportunities.

Whatever Kelly expects from them to make his system work is not being produced.

I fear it is 1961 again, and we are headed for the equivalent of Kuharich's heartbreaking 5-5. Something has to change.

  • Two things stood out for me. First, the terrible play in the secondary. Reminded me of the Weis years. Players not knowing whom to guard. A lot of those big pass plays were jump balls that we defended very poorly. Second, why does Kelly insist on trying to run between the tackles on third and short? Why did a pitch to Cierre to get him outside the tackle box or a fake into the line a toss to the TE? The USF game was frustrating. This game was just depressing. And I live in Michigan so I have to hear all week how great Denard is.....puke !

  • Wasn't defense supposed to be the stalwart of this team? Yikes!

  • good solid execution is the direct result of athletes performing as they are taught by utilizing their talents in positive ways. this is not a teaching/coaching issue, the players alone control their destiny in this area. coach kelly et al, are so frustrated as you and i. plain and simple to me. the lad
