What We Learned: USC 31, ND 17

The concept of being uncomfortable as a favorite, defensive gaps (or filling holes), where will this offense be minus Michael Floyd next year, and much more, are reviewed

    Lou Somogyi

  • Lou,
I agree on Atkinson. I would like to see him on the field on offense, I can't believe that he wouldn't help stretch the field. Also would like to see Devarius Daniels. I am at the point where I want to see more of these playmakers on the field now getting some experience. Also, as more and more of the season goes by it appears there is a large gap of play between Blanton (very good) and Gary Gray (not so good). Never more evidenced by the play where our dline batted a ball and it fluttered 15 yards down field to be caught by the SC receiver while Gray was still cushioned 5 yards behind him. Also need better QB play. Barkley so much better than our troika it's not even funny.

    lennyd

  • Great stuff Lou. Hard to swallow but hard to disagree with the overall premise that a "glass ceiling" exists for us between good and great.

You did not mention anything on the overall game planning Lou. The offense clicks best when we are devoutly balanced between run and pass. We did nothing to help our pass game by going away from the run so quickly - it was not as if USC was stuffing the run, we were just not running the ball.

And on D scheme - 1) was "beyond soft" coverage a scheme? and 2) no ability to adjust to stop the run up the middle all night?

    God. Country. Notre Dame.

  • USC found a way to get the ball in Robert Woods hands, the same couldn't be said for the Irish coaching finding ways to get Micheal Floyd more touches.

  • jimlafrace,

I thought similar to the USF game, when NDquickly fell behind 16-0 and against USC, 14-0 after two possessions by both teams, there was perhaps some panic of not sticking with the run game. But in that situation, USC also is able to stack the line and dare you to pass more often. Sometimes I wonder if ND is the inverse of a triple-option team. Option teams are best when they pass when they want to, not when they're forced to. ND is best at the run when it wants to, not when forced to. There are also some great athletes on that USC team. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

To me everything the tone was set on that first USC series. I think many might have anticipated USC licking its chops and saying, "Okay, let's play bombs away right away and test that questionable pass defense." They avoided that easy temptation and ran the ball 11 times for 60 yards on the TD march. That's when I said, 'Uh, oh, now this is really going to spread the defense and open the passing lanes, because they've established the run like they never have before." I'm not saying ND would have won with Ethan Johnson in the lineup (bad ankle), but it could have been a boost up front.

    Lou Somogyi

  • Lou, in addition to Michael Floyd, Trevor Robinson, and Jonas Gray (I think?) on offense, we'll have to replace almost our entire secondary (Harrison Smith, Robert Blanton, Gary Gray), and parts of our line-backing core and D-line as well.

So you're right--add to that Manti Te'o and Tyler Eifert, and we have some BIG shoes to fill. Best to temper our collective expectations now about 2012 unless some sophs and freshmen step up in a very big way.

    joethoma

  • Start playing the young guys more often and get Hendrix to play 50% of the game...probably 8-4 so whats to lose....need to try to get ready for next year....feel sorry for Crist but he is snakebitten...looking at him on the tv shots..he looked frightened..I must admit there have been some bizarre events this year ...if I was Kelly I would be beside myself...

    BORGHI

  • I agree, the season is lost; we might as well start developing these younger guys and get them ready for next year. This year has been a huge disappointment....I'm sick of losing to UM and USC almost every year...What do you guys think we are missing that elite teams have?? It really feels like we will never make that 'next level' progression that BK was supposed to bring to the table....

    ryanloth

  • This is not hard to figure... USC came in with one focus RUN the ball shorten the game, make it trench warfare... they did we didnt... I do like Kelly a lot but until this coach and like those before him, get the Identity and determination of the school line up and run the ball we will be averaging 3 TO a game in big games... USC won because they RUN THE BALL and STOP THE RUN...DUH

    dpoore12

  • That 1st quarter blew me away! One team came in to play(SC) the other did not! ND's D&Oline play just made me sick! I do NOT believe that that the better talent won - ND coming out like that speaks to MENTAL preperation - lack of focus. Well I hope they come out steamming against Navy - disappointing is putting it mildly. Nevertheless - GO IRISH!!

    irish13

  • Even with all of that....USC won because we turned it over 3 times. If we dont turn the ball over....we win.

    phi_sig23

  • They were exposed by a better team . No comparison between the level of the coaching staffs . If Kelly can't pull this team together the season could get very ugly .

    spenna

  • I think we learned the following:

That our offensive and defensive lines are not as dominant as we thought they were.

That our defensive team speed is lacking, especially on the edges. Our LBs are big and strong but not fast and we are exploited to the outside. Also our CBs still give 8 yard cushions.

We learned what our Offense looks like without Michael Floyd because USC took him out of the game.

  • I wonder how many times in the Brian Kelly offense has Crist taken snaps under Center at practice? This was Dyane's first serious game minutes since the home opener. He seemed to be doing doing a pretty good job moving the team down the field. He looked like he was getting into the rhythm
and speed of the game considering his lack of playing time. I found myself pulling really hard for this kid and that his confidence would grow with every play. The guy knows that he does not have the confidence of his head coach but he was responding nicely. Then as many coaches do today, Kelly outsmarts himself and sends in Hendrix for what everyone knew was the run option but Crist showed last year that he was more than capable of running the ball in for a score himself. Maybe it all falls on Crist but sometimes it better to leave well enough alone. Crist was moving the team, getting up to game speed after a long layoff & slowly gaining some confidence, then poof off to the sidelines. There was no reason to make this change other than to get cute & over coach. Man, I would love to know how many snaps under Center Crist took during practice and yes some will say how hard is the Center to Qb exchange but lets not forget that you play like you practice.

  • That Gary Gray play stuck out in my mind as well. It looked like he was standing in Molases.

Bingo. USC said, "I have no respect for your run defense, and once I take away your bread and butter, you're going to be vulnerable to play action all night." And that's what happened. USC marched down the field, and Barkley went PA all night against us. They got in our defense's heads on that first drive, and we never recovered.

But look at how many things went against ND:

Refs were really unkind to ND. Yes, Calabrese was an absolute moron for his actions, but really? Personal foul there? How about the no PI call for Floyd? There are a bunch more, but those really stood out.

Lateral pass that was just BARELY lateral if at all. Wood bricks it, and the game is essentially over. Seriously? Not only do we not get a solid gain, but it results in a turnover?

Dayne Crist fumbles just as the game looks to be tied. For crying out loud, I don't understand the thought process behind Crist, Hendrix, Crist, but Denard Robinson does the same exact thing and scores a TD against us. To ND, two games are lost as 14 point swings occur.

That is just bad luck. I know preparation is another explanation for it, and a lot of that falls on Kelly's shoulders. But I do agree with about everything Kelly said. This team needs to get its act together and show some focus.

  • I was at the game. The main thing i learned is this team is still emotionally fragile in these situations. Not just this bunch but for the last 15-20 years we just don't know how to win. i am really disgusted.

  • Agree with you on this one Illiest. I thought the bye week hurt. No classes created too much free time. Too many recruits on campus, the night game and the music in the stadium created too much of a carnival atmosphere. Seemed more like a rock concert in a way. USC came in more focused and business like

  • Believe we did not learn much.

The first loss it was slightly consoling/good news that the loss was

despite more talent ND had a few easily fixable mistakes/problems.

By the third replay that same news is bad news.

We reaffirmed ND has talent, but doesn't play four quarters and repeats bone headed mistakes.

I am old guy (with poor memory however)

but can't ever remember an ND ninety plus fumble return for TD

    before this year,

Now two by ND this season,

your mention of a once per decade occurrence

is that per team per decade or per all of college football

    per decade?

    garyfh

  • You coach poise. This loss falls on the coaching staff, plain and simple. Lane Kiffin out coached Kelly. Process that one.

Disagree all you want, but great coaches instill poise by their demeanor and philosophy (Ara, Lou, Knute, Frank). Kelly hasn't shown it at this level, doesn't exhibit it on the sideline, doesn't transfer it to the team, or certainly hasn't at this point.

Expect mediocrity until Kelly leaves, then you won't be disappointed with 8-4 and 7-5, and be surprised if he learns to teach the poise and team spirit needed to rally the program. Next year is a disaster waiting to happen. The only thing that would be worse would be for us to lose to Navy and BC this year, but play the spoiler at Stanford.

I haven't been so disapointed in a performance by the Irish coaching staff since Willingham.

It's who we are losing to, and how.

....no way we win even without the turnovers. We had no shot at stopping them. No way you win when your opponent spends the whole night in 2nd and 2.

  • Their freshman/sophomores made our seniors look like crap.

Why make your best cover corner a nickel back? Blanton should have played Weoods exclusively. SC had Robey on Floyd the whole game. Just another example of how Kiffin outcoached Kelly.

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

  • garyfh,

Over the last 45 years, there have been four fumble returns for TDs of 80 yards or more against ND, or about one per decade — but unfortunately two occurred within seven games this year.

Leroy Keyes did it for Purdue (96 yards) in 1966 — but then Nick Eddy returned that kickoff for a touchdown. Tennessee also had an 80-yard return at ND in 2001 to make it 7-0 in a 28-18 victory.

Really, it's more like once ever 15-20 years.

When Kelly took Crist out and put in Hendrix, I thought the same thing-you are going to outsmart yourself. Good question on how many snaps they take under center. One thing I see is they will only run a dive play from under center. As an old quarterback I can tell you, the center snap is not hard, if you work on it. Shotgun snap is tougher. Personal opinion, never going to be a top tier with Rees at QB. Can't run, locks on to one receiver and tries to force his passes. Wish Crist had been given a better chance in the beginning--think we would have seen a different QB.
