Interesting article I came across this morning that compares the football recruiting budget to its class rank from last year. Surprisingly there isn't a very strong correlation between shelling out a lot of money and landing a top recruiting class.
For example, Florida St. had a top three recruiting class last year while despite coming in No. 25 on the list of most money spent for football recruiting among public schools. Tennessee, on the other hand, spent the most money (over $1 million) and didn't crack the top 10 in the recruiting rankings last year.
Notre Dame is a private school so doesn't have to report specific football recruiting budget, but they do report overall recruiting expenses for men's sports at $1,612,608. After looking at a bunch of other schools it seems like most programs use about 60 percent of their budget on football and 40% on the rest of its sports. So that would mean the Irish spend a little north of $900,000 on football recruiting if they follow the same trend. That puts them in the top five of big spenders. That makes sense when you think about flights and hotels, since Notre Dame recruits much more nationally than most other programs.
Here's the full list...

businessofcollegesports.comInteresting stuff but the whole Florida State example is moot because almost all their talent comes from within a driveable radius. Also, I recall Stanford actually having spent the most on recruiting overall -- obviously they weren't included in this list because they're private. I can't remember what article I read...
I'd be curious to see where USC would rank...in the thick of all the talent in CA but still traveling to FL and other southeast areas a bunch.
I wonder if these numbers include the salaries of the recruiters for each school. I understand that they are coaches as well (in most cases) but paying them while they are out recruiting is an expense of recruiting.
Whether it be the school's capability or the merit of the coach/ recruiter, the salary of these coaches/ recruiters (if included) could sway these numbers greatly.
Here's an article I wrote about six months ago after talking to associate AD Tom Nevala about how much money ND spends on recruiting and where that budget goes. It provides a little more info.
According to the U.S. Dept of Ed., Auburn and Tennessee are the two biggest spenders on recruiting.
Notre Dame spends more money than almost any other university on searching for its next batch of athletes.
