What's the single biggest problem in recruiting today?

  • 1. Luring recruits with impermissible benefits
    2. Oversigning ... and then cutting to make the 85-scholarship limit
    3. Promising kids that academics won't get in the way of football
    4. Negative recruiting tactics
    5. Employing a recruit's high school coach/girlfriend/parent
    6. Paying recruiting "analysts" to push a recruit to your school
    7. Widely disparate admission standards
    8. Other?

Try to pick the worst of all. I know, it's hard.

  • I would say 2. Another one which kind of fits in that is 1 year renewable scholarships or a four year commitment. I think the 4 year commitment is the easiest fix for oversigning.

  • number 2 seems to be getting to be more of a problem.

  • I think the simpliest way to solve it is go to a hard cap 95 scholly. This would take into account for Transfers, Medical, kicked off team, Early entry to NFL and whatever other loopholes they try to use these days. Make it a hard cap that way everyone is playing with the same amount of kids.
And for teams that commit NCAA infractions banned the school 1 year from signing anyone. No more reduction of scholarships just you simply cant sign anyone.

  • I just looked at my own list from the NCAA's eyes for a minute.

It seems to me the NCAA hasn't said jack squat about most of the things on the list. They've only weighed in on numbers 1 and 6.

That's shameful. Sure makes you wonder if the NCAA is really interested in cleaning up recruiting issues.

  • 2 on two fronts:

First, while these are all wrong and unfair, the fact that most schools do most of them kind of evens out the playing field in the end, at least for the top 30 or 40 programs in the country. It's #2 that creates a disparity since mainly the SEC is the main culprit. How many NCs has the SEC won in a row? A lot. Are the people born in those areas really, truly just more athletic than in other parts of the country--of course not, and you'd have to be mental to think so (I was born in Alabama, therefore I'm faster than you!). It's quite evident that since the Big 10, which was formerly the preeminent conference in all of college football, stopped any oversigning the SEC has slowly and steadily built up a competitive advantage simply because a lot of their programs have MORE superior talent, instead of a limited number of superior talent. ND also used to be able to build an advantage before scholarship limits came into effect.

Second and more tragically, this hurts the student-athlete the most. The other choices might mislead a kid but no choice on the list can destroy a kid's life like the way number 2 can. Imagine being promised a scholarship and working like a dog for a year (which is a looooong time when you're 17) just so that you can step into your dream program and have a chance to play only to be told: "sorry we're actually full, but if you go to this junior college and work hard we might give you the scholarship next year or the year after that." And even if you do manage not to get cut before you even step on campus, you might get your scholarship cut the next year if a better athlete is found. It's crooked and wrong despite any positive spin these coaches might try to put on it (i.e. "It helps some student-athletes to afford an education they might not otherwise be able to") it's harmful to everybody other than that coach and his school. Period.

  • I suggested on another thread.....85 max and for a 6 year term or 4 year degree whichever occurs first. Not opposed to bump it up to 95. That said, I just read an article where an Auburn sociology proffessor saw where a football player was a sociology major yet this professor has never had the student in class. After checking, none of the sociology proffessors has ever had the fb player in class. The ncaa did an investigation and apparently, this student did all major classes online (wink wink nod nod). Instead of testing the athletes knowledge of his major, the ncaa just cleared him because auburn offered the online classes to all students. Since the ncaa is without nads, if teams want to cheat, no matter the rules.....they will cheat! Until the student athletes and their families decide to draw a line in the sand when it comes to these cheating programs and their 50% graduation rates, as well as dumping upper classmen because they arent good enough.....these schools will continue to cheat and treat these young men as nothing more than pieces of meat!

  • 2 is definatly the biggest problem for ND right now. Lou always said that 1/3 of your class would never really contribute, which equals to 28 out of 85 players on a roster that really don't add anything to your team.

So think about how much it helps teams that oversign and then cut to get to 85. After 1 or 2 years of noticing a player isn't going to contribute they can simply tell the kid to pack his bags.
