Who was a better coach: Lou or Ara?

They both had amazing motivational skills. They could both recruit, and develop players. And most important they both won and won big. So which one would you like to see coach again if it was possible.
I think I would want Ara back due to his complete ressurection of the program. What's your thoughts?

Its close but i think ara. You could make an argument for lou because there were a lot more competetive teams in the late 80's, but ara was truly the epitome of a college coach.

Ara was the finest coach of my lifetime. Lou was a fine coach, but he could not hold a candle to Ara,

Being as objective as possible, and having seen both their entire careers at Notre Dame, I'd be hard pressed to find a qualitative difference between them. Lou definitely played the more difficult schedules, and he beat USC like a drum. Ara had a less than mediocre record against the Trojans. Ara is a legend for reasons including his coaching prowess, but also for his absolute, undivided loyalty to the university after he resigned. He's also one of the truly all time great gentlemen the game has produced.
The most important part of this thread, in my mind, is that we should all be thankful for having had them both.

Ara. He won parts of 3 national championships at ND.

VERY VERY difficult choice ..... I might have to go with Lou based on the schedules he played and his record against top 15 teams....something like15-1....beat UM 4 in a row and SC 11 straight....think about that for a second......Ara was 2-8-1 I think...IMO both had two NCs.....really tough call

Ara had a better winning % and 1 more NC. Lou stood out in his own unique way as a leader. One disadvantage that Lou had that Ara never did was Malloy, Beauchamp, and Wadsworth. Actually that is 3.

Cannot be "rational" on this question. I was a student during the Era of Ara. Love Lou. But I would walk across a bed of burning coals for Ara. He was not just the coach of the ND football team .. he was the conscience of the student body.
I have never seen one man have such an effect on 10,000 (mostly male) students.
