Why Tommy Rees Started In 2011

In an excerpt from our one-on-one interviews for the 2012 Football Preview, offensive coordinator Chuck Martin explained what distinguished Tommy Rees at quarterback.

  • Thanks Lou, Good read.

Now one question remains. Knowing the others have a greater upside, does the staff gamble on Navy and Purdue with Golson or Hendrix hoping two softer games give them enough experience to handle the next 10 games?

I say, shoot for the moon and shun the known.

I am not in favor of this at all, but with every article I read I become slightly more convinced that ND is going to name Rees the starter for Navy. That is, if he is cleared to play after his legal trouble.

Terrible irony (for Rees anyway) that the potential hurdle for playing this coming season is by off-field problems. Something he and he alone had complete control over if he had simply made more intelligent decisions.

  • Accurate, quick release to Mike under double coverage. Barely pulled in by our now first round wide-out... all the while our wide open receivers jog back to the line of scrimmage, only to be tunnel visioned (yes, I said it) out of the next play..

Not throwing to Mike or Tyler? Well you can always turn it over...

  • As much as this article seems to be preparing us for TR starting, I still think he's suspended for game 1.

  • I agree with SDW......are you telling us TR is going to be the starting QB???
We need to get a guy in at QB that has the arm and the legs to make things happen while not turning the ball over. 19 turn overs.......... really!
The only thing more maddening then reading a fluff piece on TR is watching him stand in a collasping pocket and thow floaters 5-10 yards away into defenses hands........14 BLEEPING INTS & 5 FUMBLES.

That was my reaction too which begged the question in my mind at least of when the interview with Chuck Martin took place.

Lou are those quotes from a recent interview with coach Martin?

  • Aside from the fact that I want to see Hendrix or Golson starting instead, I don't think Rees should start because of the off campus trouble he got himself into. Even though I agree with Kelly keeping Floyd around after his DUI, this incident is more reminiscent of SEC players getting into trouble. Rees thought he could out wrestle a cop and he should have consequences for his behavior.

  • I continue to hear that the coaching staff wants Golson to rise to the challenge and take the job. The QB job is Golson's to take.

  • FOFM,

I conducted this interview with Chuck Martin in the middle of June, about a week before we went to print with our 160-page 2012 Football Preview. The media relations department allowed us specifically to conduct a 1-on-1 with Martin and DC Bob Diaco for the Preview.

We had an agreement that we won't print the whole interview on our website, but excerpts of it are permitted. I thought this piece would be a good one to run.

I'm not sure I agree with the statements on this thread that a soft campaign is going on to get ready for Rees to be the starter again. When Martin said "you're trying to figure out the short- and long-term implications of what you do," I took it as everyone realizing that for the long haul beyond 2012, Rees might not be the best overall answer.

The bottom line for the staff is nobody else has emerged enough to grab control of the position. If ND is trailing Navy 21-17 with two minutes left and 80 yards to go, Rees probably at this point would be the one they'd be most confident in using for good reason.

"At some point you just hope somebody seizes the job," Martin noted in this interview. "They're all in position to battle for the job, win the job, but we're looking for somebody to take the job — with plays, with actions, with demeanor, the whole deal. I've said it a hundred times: We don't determine who plays. They determine it."

So, what you are saying is that he made the wrong read, took too long to make it, then decided to run, only to discover that his legs wouldn't make the play.
    Yep.

  • Lou, please say it ain't so. Posing that ND is trailing Navy 21-17 with 2 minutes left and 80 yards to go, you say that the staff would trust TR the most. Well, if that is the scenario, they can insert Bozo the Clown as far as I am concerned, because after being a fan for over 60 years I will not care anymore.

  • who chuck, you certainly let the tiger out of the cage on that one... not a good article if you are looking to explain away loses, "we didn't have a choice"? All that needs be said is, Tommy made mistakes and he is working to change that habit, and allow other guys to step up if they want it". In my opinion, Chuck kinda threw Tommy under the bus there.

10-2/11-3 this season... with Everett starting in Ireland and finishing in Orange/Sugar Bowl... Mark it down..
