Why so boring?

  • I'm new to the board. I've left Frank and II because there's so much profanity and discord it's no fun for me, and not good for my son. However, this board has so few posts that I'm not sure it's worth it, either. Is this so new that its membership is still really small? Are there other reasons why there are so few posts.

  • I'd like to think we're more selective in our use of keystrokes here, Mr. R. I'm not being facetious in saying that. I left one of those sites a while ago, because most of the board was cluttered with too much drivel that just wasted my time. If there's something you want to discuss, please start a thread. Right now, some very good posters are on hiatus because they disdain all the recruiting drama, for which I don't blame them. But, we can still get a few good discussions cranked up. However, some folks are burned out on all the talk, particularly after the frustrations of the season. Check out some of the threads by irishm. He's always asking questions. Sometimes they fall flat, but he's trying to prod some meaningful discussion. It's slow, but it's not stagnant.

    Glad you're here, by the way.

  • Mr. Rice. Welcome aboard. It's just a little quiet time around here right now. After the bad bowl loss, and with LOI day still 3 weeks away, the enthusiasm is waning. Stick with us, as you'll learn, most of us have also been, or still are participants in the other boards you mentioned, and this one blows em both away. The staff here is second to none as far as working a story. Jason Sapp and Steve Wiltfong bring the recruiting right to your front door, with the most accurate and up to date info. Lou Somogyi is an endless supply knowledge regarding all things Notre Dame. We police ousrselves re; language, content, etc... Give it a shot, I'm sure you'll come to appreciate it.welcome

  • If I can add to what the Pig said, I left II a while ago because the constant banter just got tiresome. This coming from a guy who not only engaged in it....I provoked it. The last 3 or so years I was over there I was also a member over here. It's a lot more mello and you can talk football or just talk beer, I like to do both.

    I tend to think the month of January is more like the silly season. Recruiting news hits its peak and people tend to get on edge over the decisions these kids make. Personally this is the time of year that bores me the most. Get the signing day over and done with so I can come back on a regular basis after everyone steps away from the ledge.

  • Welcome, Mr. Rice! You've actually caught most of us with a near literal hangover from a frustrating year. There are dozens and dozens of (usually) regular posters that are taking a break for awhile.

    Post early and often!

    HI Lou;

    We've actually spoken several times, but it was many years ago, long before electronic media replace the old BGI. I always enjoyed my discussions with both you and Tim. When the web came about, I ended up at NDNation with Ed O'Connell. He actually asked me to help him with that board, but I was, and remain too busy with other things. When Mike and Smitty showed up there, I stayed with them for probably 13 years. I finally left because posters whose handles you might know were too obnoxious, and there was a definite double standard between certain alumni who thought themselves erudite and influential and the more every day posters. After that, I joined II for a year, but it's almost as bad. I've enjoyed it here in my brief time.

    Thanks to all for the welcome. I don't really post a lot. Even as an old man, I'm too busy for voluminous composition. I'll chime in from time to time, and will enjoy other posters when I can't.

  • Mr. Rice,

    Is it just coincidence that when electronic media came to the forefront, ND football began to regress? Kind of telling how ND fell a little behind the times in the late 1990s and is now just catching up.

    Mr. Rice,

    Lou is being modest. He does have all of the answers for everything ND related. You will find his knowledge, writing and opinions alone more than enough to make your stay on this site worthwhile.

  • Mr. Rice,

    A while ago I decided to post less banter and make an effort to post things that are actually intelligent, football-related items. Accordingly, my posts have become far more rare because I'm not that intelligent and don't know much about football. Sigh. But I do like beer.

    I think it has more to do with guys named Malloy and Beauchamp. Notre Dame was built by football. They were embarrassed by it, and couldn't stand being regarded as a football factory. It's hard enough to hire a great coach; a lot of it is pure luck. How do you really know, even if a guy has been successful at Miami of Ohio and Northwestern that he can handle the rigors of Notre Dame? When you're not evaluating every criteria available to weed out candidates (like head coaching experience, college coaching experience, hard core integrity and a work ethic beyond that of any normal man) you're virtually doomed to end up with a loser. Ergo, Faust, Davie, Willingham and Weis.

    I'm a bit defensive about electronic ignorance. I don't tweet. I'm not on facebook. I'm not linked in. I'm a cyber non-entity. The worst part about it, I think, is that I'm proud of it.
