we are 1 player away from being great.

  • And all 5 losses this year the other team had the superior qb. In all 5 games if we could have traded QB's we would not have lost any of the games. This year if we would've had luck in they would have rees we would've been a 21 point favorite going into the game. If we can get just good qb play we should be fine.

    Irish4Life

  • I agree with the one player for 2012... but I think that player is a DB/punt returner... a Honey Badger(Tyrann Mathieux)... I think we'll see a change this year at QB for the better and it should make for the ball being spread around. Eifert's numbers(the Y) will drop slightly as will the W(vacated by Floyd yet handed over to Daniels/Greenbury), yet the Z(Toma) will increase as will X(Jones/Ferguson) and QB rush yards... it will be balanced where you dont know who is going to be the lead character... but the overral yards output will be the same, perhaps better and CERTAINLY more opportunistic in key areas of the field

but on defense, we're missing that step in front of a short route and take it for 6 the other way type DB...the same guy who can bring the stadium to its feet for punt returns...

I hope a young man in MAryland is listening... lol

  • QB play was a glaring problem this past season but all those losses weren't isolated to just the quarterback position.

  • read it again giga never said they were isolated to qb all i said if we switched qbs we win every game because they have a better qb.

    Irish4Life

  • and I say even if we do switch qbs we wouldn't have won every game

  • Umm...I agree to a point. WHat about our lousy special teams play. You don't think that was a factor? Our return game was abymal, and that's putting it nicely.

  • Well Cousins from Michigan St. Was and is a whole lot better than Rees and we won that game by 4 TDs....

  • I said the games we lost, we beat msu.

    Irish4Life

  • All I'm saying is every game that we lost this year we were inferior at the quarterback position

    Irish4Life

  • I agree with what your saying but the QB position (being the most important) is a big hole to fill. LSU was the only BCS bowl team that doesn't have a top flight QB. If you don't have solid qb play chances are high that you aren't successful. A great QB can make up for other lacking areas (See Griffin 3rd) but USC and Stanford were just better overall. USF caught all the breaks but Daniels is not any better than Rees and Michigan still leaves me scratching my head... Denard can't throw a lick.

  • We are more than one player from being "great". An improved qb would make us a lot better. There is no doubt about tha,t but "great". No way ! We need to getter better push from our offensive linemen and be able to dominate in the run game. We need improved corners. We need a big back who can get short yardage. We need a punt returner.

improved corners... I think Tee might be one, BJackson might be another

big back to get the tough yard...vs marquee teams...in November... couldnt agree more.. but Mahone??

Off Line to get a good push... certainly you must think the Left side from center over qualifies no? Right side is green and untested mind you, but 3/5 is top quality beef we know for sure...

punt returner.... THIS is where not only I agree, but also could be reinforced by the top category(CBs)...I really and truly believe that we are a Ronald Darby away. He could be our Tyrann Mathieux in 2013.... this season a player like him could be a nickel back in press coverage and return punts, by soph year, our secondary would be sick....

hence I agree with the OPoster....one player from great... great being BCS bowl contender

  • I think our QB play was only half of it, the other was turnovers, both lack of TO's on defense and too many on O (South Florida and USC were prime examples were turnovers were probably more important than QB). Granted, a lot of the turnovers were by our QB though, and the lack of turnovers by the other team, was partly because of their better QB. MSU was a special game where we won the turnover battle and our defense matched up perfectly with their power-run offense, we also got a KO return, and we got an almost pick 6 at our own goaline against them.

Imagine if ND just had a decent, solid QB like Cousins, instead of the one we had this year, and say those 2 freak 99 yard fumbles didn't happen. Everything else was the same, so still a lot of TO's and crappy punt return unit. We would have been like 11-2 at least. We beat USF and FSU definitely. (so 10-3) We probably beat at least one of Stanford, UM, USC. (11-2); and maybe we get 2 of those 3. So, 12-1.

I mean, it's really sad because ND had a once rvery 20 years ILB in TEO, once a decade WR in Floyd, an All-American TE, a very solid DL and OL, and a very experienced, decent secondary. Things don't often line up that much. I'm afraid we are gonna miss Teo, Blanton, H. Smith and Floyd a lot more than we think in the next couple of years....

    IrishTN

  • In response to some of the above comments, I don't think we can complain much about our oline, dline or dbacks. Sure, they may not have been in the top 10 in the country, but they were probably in the top 20, and just as good or better than what ND has had in the last decade. The QB was the huge, glaring, rotting cancer that killed the season, not the oline or DB's.

With ALL due respect to the players I am about to name, I differ.

First of all, Teo comes back next year. Speaking of him, he is not a once in 20 years LB for ND. Not only that, it is the position of least significance for us. You NEED high quality DEnds and top notch CBs... you dont need a 1st team AA at ILB.

Floyd. I hesitate before I say what I am to say, but Michael Floyd is a tad overrated. Sorry but I believe it to be true. Will his 6'3, 225 pound frame be missed NEXT year? Absolutely. What we will miss most of him is his BLOCKING ability first, ability to elevate over lesser competition in the red zone. After that, he is an above average WR. He will be drafted in the first round, the second WR, a position in the draft that says that one should be elected to a pro bowl or 2 or 3 or 4(given that 10 ish WRs are taken for the pro bowl annually). MIchael Floyd IMO wont make the pro bowl. He was great for us at ND. We love him always and we'll miss him, but not for long.

Blanton was top quality, for all but Stanford game. He will be the position that we must hold serve for 2012 and hope to improve upon atthe other. Again, top teams have top notch CBs that say "dont dare throw it my way....warned ya!" Blanton was nice, but its possible to do better there.

Harr Smith has untouchable intangibles that all players and coaches point to. HIs ability was great, his leadership is all the charts fabulous... you cant have enough guys like that..

  • Tommy was a large part of the problem, and that's too bad because he "saved our bacon" at the end of 2010. What a difference a year makes. That being said, we also had "crappy" pass protection - Darby could have helped us here. Not to mention the fact that other than Akinson, no one could return "squat".

You can't win a National championship, when you can't stop the passing game, return for more than 2-4 yards average, and have over 20 TO's.

Replacing Rees will, eventually, help. But we need help in other areas. I'm not Kelly's biggest fan, but the guy is after the right recruits, and he's getting a lot of them.

Your post has really stimulated us - good job:)) Not sure ND would have won vs Bartley or Luck but ND would have made it closer with a more moblie qb - gdomer2710 makes a good point about our lousy punt return game. But you've got our collective juices going - challenging post - good work!! GO IRISH!!
