It's never been clear to me how you can have 4 conference champions play for the NC when there are lots of teams who are not in those conferences. There are 120 FBS teams, but I do not think we'll have "super" conferences with 30 teams. Can the NCAA tell a large group of teams they cannot, by rule, play for the NC? I realize that, practically speaking, that's the way it is now, but I think if it were to make such a rule the NCAA would run likely be charged with anti-competitive activities, restraint of trade, and all of that.

Yes it means non power conference teams will never be able to win a championship. That is why Boise State and TCU have joined Power conference teams. Also the NBC T.V deal has allowed ND to stay independent because they make enough money from it, but joining a conference could force them to sign a different tv deal. In the end, don't see the four conference champions play for a championship working in the end
