Let me precede this post by saying that I am a huge ND fan in every way. I fully believe the Irish will be successful this season and think Brian Kelly is a good coach. But....
Let's just say the Irish's super tough schedule and possible lack of leadership/strength at QB and WR (among some other positions) leaves them with a 7-5 record and another invite into the Champ Sports Bowl. Do you see Brian Kelly making it past this year? I don't. Also, who might be some head coaching candidates we could see the Irish going after?
There is a reason why we have not had a big name head coach since Lou.....Davie,Ty,Charlie & BK were certainly not being fought over by big name schools.....the big names Saban, Meyer etc passed on the opportunity and unfortunately for good reason....you ask why???? The answer to that question lies in the real reasons behind Lou's departure. Notre Dame cannot get by on simply being ND, plain and simple, it's a different time and the allure of the Golden Dome is just not what it used to be, and yes I know that Ara and Lou were not big names prior to coming to South Bend...but young boys aren't sitting starry eyed in front of the TV, as much, on Saturday's gushing.......gee whiz Dad I sure want to play football for Notre Dame! In my opinion unless the adminstration completely gives in and loosens up entry requirements the next several HC's will be choice number 2 or 3 on the list. and the list of 8-5 seasons will roll on. The thing is though.....personally i don't know which is worse compromising academics for the potential sake of the program or mediocre football seasons????
I am of the opinion that had we pursued Jon Grudin and Urban Meyer seriously enough we could have had either of them.
As far as academic entry requirements being a barrier, this is largely a myth, as Stanford is demonstrating right now. In fact, ND is not among the top schools in terms of SAT scores of incoming players, as the link below (from a few years ago) clearly shows. For normal students, ND is very, very selective, but football players get a huge break on admissions.
On average, football players at big programs scored 220 points lower than classmates, study shows.

If you define "academics" as we should....
--- which is not entrance ACT or SAT scores...
--- but graduation rates from "real" academic curriculums...(not Michigan's "football player" curriculum in their football player school)
Then it is rather obvious why no coach like Urban Meyer (noted for his felony and misdemeanor convictions at Florida) would ever coach at ND.
If a coach has to graduate almost 95% of his incoming class or get fired....
--- the pool of available "big time" coaches is almost zero.
As I repeatedly said: "at this time, Kelly is our only option...given ND's administration..."
Why worry about the what ifs?!?!?!?!?
I am just glad BK finished off another very good recruiting class, am 100% confident BK is the right man for the job, and looking forward to the 2012 season.
What if ND goes 13-0 and wins the national title?!?!?
I think Kelly will get 5 years from the ad that hired him regardless of what happens this season. I really hope he's the guy and sense that to him this is still a dream job
What is wrong with you all? You've been so jaded by the coaching turnovers since Holtz that you aren't willing to give BK 3 years before writing him off? He's changed the system as a whole. He has the players on a different meal plan, lifting and conditioning regiment, he's recruited back to back top 10 classes. Give the guy time to get his system in place, his players to mature and you'll see the difference. What does "The golden dome just isn't what it used to be" suppose to mean? We have EXCELLENT recruiting classes each year! Obviously the appeal is still there, and much to the credit of BK and HIS staff. Jesus I am sick of "DIE HARD ND FANS" complaining after back to back winning seasons. No, they were not 10-2 or 11-1. Yes, it's frustrating losing to Michigan and USC or Stanford. The guy has his stuff together and he will win. The recruits are here, the juniors will be his class "sorta", the sophs are his guys and now the incoming freshman. You can't always expect all Freshman to step up like Lynch and Tuitt and just win a National Championship. The administration has nothing to do with our success or failures. Sure, we're not gonna get "athletes" from Glenville (Cleveland) Ohio, but we still get 4-star and 5-star players just like every other big program. Take away the fumbles and turnovers (which Kelly had nothing to do with, except maybe he should make any player who fumbles the ball run a mile like in Remember the Titans) and we have a team that is 11-1. We're there guys, the players just need to believe in that and believe that every time they step on the field that they are invincible, not because they are Notre Dame, but because they believe in themselves and each other AND because they are ND. Stop crying.
i hear you i just think nd fans are sick of recruiting championships followed by a lot of coulda been seasons. you are right, nd is still a big time program capable of success. Kelly has made a lot of improvements. however, most nd fans will never consider 7 or 8 wins a "winning season." it's reasonable to wonder why the offensive minded guru hasn't done better with the qb position thus far. these expectations come with the territory and bk understands the pressure of this job. but i don't think anyone's crying bc they hold their program to a higher level. hopefully we can start living up to expectations again. who here doesn't drink that cool aid every single year? we're all on the same team here. GO IRISH!
Stanford has not been a consistent powerhouse since Pop Warner was there.
Relax. Unless the team goes 3-9 or something like that next year, which is pretty unlikely, Kelly is going to get his 5 years not matter what we say.
The bigger question is what level can Kelly's team reach during these 5 years.
I really hate ND fans sometimes, i really do.
That is the biggest "What if" i've read in a long time. Not going to happen. I would like for that to happen, but not going to happen.
