OT: heavily interested in going into the Air Force. Thoughts?

  • I already have a B.S. in Athletic Training and I am having trouble getting into a Doctoral Physical Therapy Program due to my GRE scores(undergraduate GPA and everything else is great). I have always said to myself if I was join go military it would be either Navy or Air Force. My Grandpa was in the AF during WW2. I am up for the challenge will be talking to a recruiter ASAP. I still want to pursue Physical Therapy or even Physician Assistant in Orthopedics. From everyone I have talked to the benefits from the AF are really good plus getting my graduate degree paid for.... What are my fellow Irish brethren thoughts on this? Ultimately it is my decision but I figured I ask see other opinions on joining the Air Force. Looking forward to reading the comments.

  • FGCU_IRISH_FAN,

I don't have much insight to offer besides the fact that my wife was in the Air Force and she has said on numerous occasions that if there was any military branch to join -- that's the one. Of course that's a biased opinion, but she speaks very highly of her experience and had recruiters from other branches suggest the same when she was going through the same evaluation process that you are.

I'm sure there are others that can offer much more than my note, but definitely wish you the best in making your decision.

If you are looking for the closest thing to the civilan world while still serving your country than the Air Force is definately ideal. The Air Force will set you up as far as the MOS's (military occupational specialty) that they have in the medical field. BUT if you want the challenge come join the Marines and serve with America's finest.

  • I am currently at the Marine Corps Base at Quantico, VA. My son graduates from The Basic School tonight, then on to Infantry Officers Course. Haven't seen him in 6 months and can't believe how much of a MAN he has become over the past year and a half. Between OCS and TBS, the change in his body and mind has been incredible. As they did with me many years ago, the Marine Corps molds men into leaders.

The Air Force is fine, and plays an important role in defending our country. I personally have much respect for all who serve, regardless of branch of service. All I know is that the Marine Corps changed my life and is currently doing great things for my son. Bet you can guess which branch would get my vote.

Im actually going in June 26th all i have to say is if youre thinking about it dont do it. It should be something you are 100%the committed to. Kind of like being a recruit. Its a great oppurtunity though. The Air Force sells itself.

  • 1st, USMC IRISH... CONGRATS!!! You should be so proud, i enlisted in the marines and served in the infantry. 3/7-(29i palms). I can say that the kids coming out of tbs and officer infantry are unmatched in their readiness, dedication and ability to lead. Your son is gonna do great things and have many young men looking up to him. A sincere best wishes and semper fi to him you and your entire family.. enjoy the day!

2nd, the the OP, i cannot speak for the airforce but if you are willing and ready YOU WILL NOT REGRET the military, it has set me up and opened doors my whole life. So as long as you are willing, which you seem to be driven, choose the branch that most appeals to you and enjoy it for what it is! Good luck, like you will not regret the military!

  • I just spent 20 yrs in the Air Force and I saw parts of the world that these eyes would have never seen because of the military. USAF where some of the best times of my life and they still are. The people you meet will be your friends and family forever. I highly recommend going in and serving your country. Good luck and I'd do it all over again.

  • As old AF guy, there is a biais that direction. With your specialty you can find similar avenues in the AF, Army and Navy. The Navy provides medical support to the Marine Corps. Recommend finding out assignment locations for your specialty and adding that to your considerations. No matter which branch you choose you'll be impressed with the level of "Smarts, Dedication and Patriotism" that the troops you work with have. When your tour is served, you'll look back and be glad you took advantage of the opportunity to serve God, Country, and Notre Dame.

  • I am the Battalion Gunner for 2nd Bn 4th Marines, I have been an infantryman for 20 years, I just got back Afghanistan, I can say that I wouldn't change a thing. Being an infantryman is a hard life, but a good life. I am biased, I say follow your instincts; if you want a hard spartan life, join the Marine Infantry or the Army SF/Rangers, if you want more of a corporate experience then the Air Force is where you should go.
