ND Alums Start NFL Combine Work

Eight former Notre Dame football players officially embark on professional careers at the NFL Scouting Combine this week in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium. The annual evaluation began Wednesday, though Thursday is when the event really gets going, and runs through Feb. 26.

Center Braxston Cave and seven other former Irish players are in Indy to show off in front of NFL scouts at the 2013 Combine.

Broken into 11 position groups, players starting arriving Tuesday and Wednesday for orientation and pre-exams and x-rays at local hospitals. Groups One (specialists), Two (offensive linemen) and Three (tight ends) were to be measured by league scouts Thursday, including Fighting Irish alumni Braxston Cave (center) and Tyler Eifert (tight end). Those groups will finish the day with the second of three consecutive evenings filled with team and media interviews.

Defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore, who is nursing a recently surgically-repaired anterior cruciate ligament, is expected to participate in interviews, as is safety Jamoris Slaughter, who suffered an Achilles tear and missed most of the 2012 season. Fellow safety Zeke Motta, running backs Theo Riddick and Cierre Wood and linebacker Manti Te’o all will work out for scouts throughout the week.

Staggered a day, Groups Four (Quarterbacks, Wide Receivers with last names in the top half of the alphabet), Five (remaining quarterbacks and wide receivers) and Six (Running Backs) arrive in Indianapolis and will begin the same process.

The first three groups continue Friday with meetings with the Players Union, followed by psychological testing and the bench press. Team interviews wrap up the day.
